I thought I saw real grass I did, I did, I saw real grass. How about that taxpayers?
A beautiful stadium. Good green natural grass, not artifical turf commonally called taxpayer turf in Washington.
did either of you guys really look at the pictures of the grass in detail??? That field looks horrible. It's opening day and there are brown spots down the left field line, in left field and just about everywhere you look. Stop looking at life with your jaded glasses and you'd see how bad that field looks. In my opinion, an artificial surface would be an upgrade!
Anonymous, your are so correct.
Oops, I just received a brush burn.
Yeah, I looked. Looked a lot better than anything the taxpayers ever bought. Whole lot cheaper for the taxpayers, too.
You people are all idiots... if you take in consideration maintenance cost and materials need for a field in 10 years the turf is not only less money but it is also going to allow more games to be played... do some research on it and drop the subject on the blog because it doesn't belong here... little to your knowledge the frontier league is a cut throat business and is very hard for players, managers, and front office staff.. so why don't we be more supportive of the teams and less complaining about the use of funds that you can't change!
Do some research of your own.
Artificial turf (tax payer financed or otherwise) is more expensive to maintain than natural grass. It must be replaced every 8 to 10 years and the cost to dispose of old turf in todays dollars is about $130,000 for an average field. Natural grassjust has to be cut, watered, and fertilized which is much cheaper that disinfectants, sprays to reduce static clings, dealing with the effect of high temperatures, drainage repair and maintenance including vacuuming and other cleaning.
This data was taken from the University of Arkansas division of agriculture. During daylight hours, a natural grass field may reach 104 degrees F. while a turf field will average 165 degree F.
Thank goodness there are not very many day games and hopefully less day events on the field.
Is this added cost worth the benefit of fewer rainout?
Get your facts straight before you shoot off your big mouth whoever posted at 7:57 AM May 21.
You people are all idiots.
You invalidated your point when the first thing you did was start
the name calling routine.
Go blow your nose on artificial turf.
Humbleness forgot to add a few items to his natural grass costs:
1. fungicides
2. insecticides
3. re-seeded and/or sodded in wear areas
4. maintenance/repairs of mowing equipment
5. etc
6. etc
7. etc
I'm also not sure what type of field Arkansas was referencing, but as per my conversations with Wild Things management, they expect a realistic life of 12-15 years for baseball turf. A natural grass field has a life expectancy too. Altoona opened in 1999 and they just did a total renovation of their field to the tune of over a million bucks. I would love to see what Altoona spends to maintain their field over a 10 year period and then compare it to what the Wild Things spend over the next 10 years. My guess is that the maintenance and renovation of the natural surface is much, much greater than artificial and we have yet to talk about labor costs!
All the Frontier League teams that don't have aritficial surfaces need to contact a certain corrupt
local person in the 46th district.
When he spreeds bull s---, turf grows.
Wild Things management, they expect a realistic life of 12-15 years for baseball turf
Who the hell thinks the WT are going to last 10-15 years? Get real. They have already exceeded their life expectancy and going downhill faster than an 40 ton truck with no brakes.
To Anon May 20 8:19, who wrote "Looked a lot better than anything the taxpayers ever bought. Whole lot cheaper for the taxpayers, too."
Not so fast. Joliet's ballpark was funded with $27 million of taxpayer money.
I repeat, $27 million.
So which Wild Things staff person told you turf was cheaper to maintain? A staffer told me it was more expensive to maintain. It seems that the more the Wild Things staff talks, the more they trip in their own line of bull sh--! Maybe they should just shut their damn yaps! If BS was gold the Wild Things would be the richest team in the League. WAIT A MINUTE, I think they ARE the richest team in the League.
"So which Wild Things staff person told you turf was cheaper to maintain?"
go back and read my post. I NEVER said a Wild Things staff member told me that it was "cheaper" or "more expensive". What I said was that he told me that they expected the turf to last 12-15 years.
"It seems that the more the Wild Things staff talks, the more they trip in their own line of bull sh--! Maybe they should just shut their damn yaps!" ...
Totally uncalled for statement. You just made something up to try and validate your opinion.
I have no idea why I thought my post would spark some sort of educated debate on this blog. This blog has a history of name calling and bullying and it is pretty obvious that debate is non-existent here.
Thanks for your post. Happy to see the Wild Things are posting here again.
Do you suppose that if the Wild Things had listened to their fans in the first place that would be all the rancor that we see now? The chance to get something for nothing was just too much for the greedy lawyer types to pass up.
I am not a member of the Wild Things, unless being a fan makes me one. It is also funny how every time someone posts on this blog they are accused of being a member of the organization or worse yet,a patsy for the organization.
Some of us are fans, just like you are not fans. I and the other supporters have as much right to post here as you do and I think it is quite funny that the few, and I mean few, people that are honestly opposed to turf and and the organization as a whole think so much of themselves that they want to dictate what decisions a business makes.
Why don't you try walking into the Steelers, Pirates, Penguins or for that matter the Observer Reporter and see how far you get with your opinions on how to run those businesses.
Because I don't care about those organizations. Smoke that!
I think more people are disgusted with who paid for the turf, yes, us the taxpayers, rather than the turf itself.
If the Wild Things organization had paid for 100% of the turf, I don't think you would have heard near as much bitterness.
Is the parking free this year since we taxpayers paid for the turf or are we getting screwed again?
You ARE getting screwed - again, and again, and etc.
"WAIT A MINUTE, I think they ARE the richest team in the League."
Wrong! Think St. Louis.
I think more people are disgusted with who paid for the turf, yes, us the taxpayers, rather than the turf itself.
Exactly right.
Chris:
St. Louis is the richest!
Do you mean Gateway or River City?
Both are in the St. Louis area.
