Frontier League gets a K-Nine unit

The expansion team that is set to join the Frontier League in 2011 and play in a new ballpark in Woodstock, Ill., will be called the McHenry County K-Nines. The nickname K-Nines was chosen over Coyotes and Mustangs. The most popular entry in the Name-The-Team Contest was Groundhogs. The Bill Murray movie "Groundhog Day" was shot in Woodstock.

It's a different name for sure, but by reading the comments on the story in the Northwest Herald, it's not a popular one with the locals. There's only one or two comments in favor of the name.

Read the story here.

Can anyone tell me why all the new teams are to the west of us? Seems to me that we need a few more teams in the east.

The league is predominately a mid west league. Washington will probably alway be the team farthest east.

Until they fold and leave town.

There are several problems with going East of Washington. If you go to Johnstown, that's a place where ownership has failed twice. That's a market that shouldn't be tried again. If you past Johnstown, you run into affiliated teams (Altoona, Harrisburg, Reading etc) and the Atlantic League (York, Lancaster).

The move that would help the Wild Things is to the south, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon. I've heard about Fairmont, W.Va., for eight years, but I can't see that ever happening.

Where the FL needs a franchise is in Indiana. Evansville is the only team from Indiana in the FL. They could use another along I-70. Terre Haute would be an ideal location for a FL team.

I like the new team's logo. My choice for best name in the Frontier League has to be the Beach Bums, though.

From the Frontier League site:
WASHINGTON WILD THINGS: Reinstated LHP Craig Snipp from the 14-day injured reserve list; assigned INF Chris Raniere to the 14-day injured reserve list; released OF Matt Cotellese.

Radio Radio said tonight that a new player will be arriving soon (tomorrow?) who will play both infield and outfield. Bench player, of course.

Great game tonight! Only 1 game under .500 now! Oh, Chris Dugan, what is the longest hitting streak in Wild Things history? And what is the record for most errors in a season by 1 player? Michael Parker has quietly compiled an 18 game hitting streak.

Longest hitting streak in Wild Things history is 26 games by Matt Swope.

The new player will be Matt Davis, who played this spring at Eastern Kentucky University. He was a third team All-American this year, batting .415 and leading the Ohio Valley Conference with 71 runs and stealing 25 bases.

Davis played center field this year but was an infielder as a junior. He is from Mt. Prospect, Ill.

From another thread
""Cotellese is just another WT experiment. They will try anybody now. This guy has no chance of making a difference here."

And just how would you know, Mr. Scout. Ever see the guy play? I'm willing to bet you haven't. Just another blowhard who will say anything on a message board without any first-hand knowledge. Go back to eating your doughnuts."

Well, I went and got a couple of donuts and before I could finish them Mr. Cotellese was gone. Go back to eating you carrot sticks!
