Motivating ballplayers, businessmen ...

The Frontier League season is only four months long, so do you ever wonder what a FL manager does during the offseason?

Southern Illinois manager Mike Pinto probably has the most unique second job of any FL manager. Since 1990, Pinto has been a motivational speaker and president of Brand Champions International, a Chicago-based consulting firm.
According to the company's website, Pinto speaks regularly at corporate meetings, conferences and conventions through the U.S., Canada and Australia.

You can check out Pinto in action during some of his presentations by going to the company's website below and clicking on the Soundstage tab.

I can just see Minto now......"Let me tell you a little about my life. I am thrice divorced, and I live in a van down by the river"....you won't appreciate that unless you watched Chris Farley on Saturday Night Live.

On the serious side, I just read 2 interesting items on the transactions page....Traverse City sold the contract of closer Jeff Williams to the New York Yankees organization, and Midwest sold the contract of starting pitcher extraordinare James Albury to the Chicago White Sox organization. Both moves help the WT chances in the East division.

But you do have to wonder how much longer it will be before we lose Ernie Banks to affiliated ball.

More breaking Frontier League transaction news...the Lake Erie Crushers today released CF Luke Hetherington. He was batting .283 with 8 HR and 28 RBI if I'm not mistaken. He homerered last night and just played in the All-Star game last week. He had decent stats, so why is he gone? Chris Dugan, could you do some snooping on that? This just seems like a really weird move. Hetherington is a "veteran", the only way the WT could get him is if Sidick, Grandstrand, or Psomas goes. And if certainly not campaigning for Sidick to go. He hasn't had the bat this year, but his defense remains amazing.

Also, Craig Snipp is due to come off the DL this week. I never did hear why he went on the DL again. Same injury as before? If Snipp is reactivated, who goes? Maybe he takes Rochelle's spot and Eachues becomes the backup catcher for the rest of the season? I see that Jenkins was supposed to get the start tonight. He impressed in the 1 appearance he made in relief.

BURGH08, too bad Farley isn't around anymore. He could have done a character based on a ticked off Wild Things fan who blows a gasket at the parking checkpoint...lol.

Swisscheda...my guess is that Craig was put on the DL because they had too many players.

Too bad the game was rained out tonight, I was looking forward to watching it on the computer.

p.s. I always look forward to reading your posts {:>

Regarding Mike Pinto...I sure he is a good motivational speaker, but I while watching the presentation, I couldn't help thinking his hair was looking a little like Rod Blagojevich!

Forgot to post this (had computer problems recently), Rockford CF Jason James had his hitting streak snapped at 40 on Sunday night, as he was stymied by Kalamazoo supreme starter Josh Brownell on Sunday night. James is still batting well over .400 53 games into the season.

Thanks H.M.!

Craig Snipp is on what in the baseball world is known as the phantom DL. He's not hurt. After his last start, Snipp wasn't going to pitch again until after the all-star break, and probably not until the fifth game. So the thinking was to put him on the 14-day DL and activate him for the Traverse City series, which means another L1 roster move. ... As for Hetherington's release, all I could find is a release from the Crushers that quoted John Massarelli as saying it was for "a violation of team policy."

Chris, thanks for the info. I didn't realize the WT had to make a L1 roster move to get Snipp back. For some reason, I thought Jenkins was a rookie, when in fact he is a L1. So...if Snipp pitches tomorrow as scheduled, 1 player in this group leaves: Banks, Jenkins, Meyer, Parker, Peterson, Raniere, or Robbins. My opinion? Leave Snipp on the DL! Banks is the best player on the team. Jenkins was outstanding tonight. Meyer has impressed in his few appearances. Parker is on a tear. Peterson is the closer, although he still scares the hell out of me. Raniere makes a great super-sub, and Robbins will be the starting catcher if Rochelle leaves as rumored. Leave the team chemistry alone, they're winning!

Great night by Chris Sidick tonight. Did a lot of the little things that you need done to win a ball game. And yet another great catch.

Chris, out of curiosity, how did Maz treat you when Lake Erie visited in the opening homestand?

Update: Radio Randy reports Luke Hetherington made some sort of gesture to the crowd during a recent visit to River City, and it wasn't the first time.

Swiss (or others that may want to chime in..)....thinking of going to the Thursay night game.

I noticed that it's 'Thirsty Thursday'. Hey, no worries, and if I go, would probably drink a few...but that being said, is it a pretty large crowd and rowdy night when they have that?

I want to go, watch the game and have a few, but when I went to the same type of promotion in Erie, it was full of dopes just wanting to fill themselves with dollar cans of beer.

I still will probably go regardless, but just need to know if I need to get my tickets early, get to the park eary, and/or get good seats up close to avoid the redneck influence....yeah, I said it. :)

Appreciate any feedback.

BURGH08, due to my LONG commute & work schedule, I can't get to games on Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday. However, I did quickly look up crowd figures for Thursday games this year: 2511, 2818, 2764, and 2884. And remember those are tickets sold, not actual butts in a seat. So you shouldn't have a problem getting a ticket. The biggest crowd I've seen was on Fireworks Friday. Americans are obsessed with watching explosions.

I've never experienced a drunken idiot in my trips to CEP. The most common incidents are sober people yelling out comments to opposing players. I highly recommend the premier box seats behind the plate. For $12, you get a great seat and waitress service. Can't beat it! By the way, another great quote, and you know what I'm talking about.

2 games under .500 now. Go Wild Things!!!

From the Chronicle - Telegram, comments from John Massarelli on release of Luke Heatherington.

“Luke Hetherington’s release was just because of club policy,” Crushers manager John Massarelli said. “The only thing I can add was that it wasn’t the first offense. It’s not like a one strike and you’re out. There’s three strikes in baseball, and there was three strikes with Luke.

“I’m not going to elaborate more than that. It was an off-the-field issue and had nothing to do with on the field stuff. It was just something that, for the betterment of the Crushers, we had to part ways.”
