Tap runs dry
Here's a story from the London Community News about the London Rippers not being able to acquire a liquor license to sell beer at Labatt Park. Yes, there's no beer available during Rippers games at Labatt (the beer company) Park.
The Rippers can't get a beer license because only one can be issued per address and the London Majors, an amateur team (in other words, a beer league team) holds the license. The Majors have been playing at Labatt Park since the 1920s.
If you've followed the Rippers' story in London, the Majors weren't happy about the Frontier League moving in on their territory. An attorney for the Majors said the Rippers can use their liquor license, but it will cost the Frontier League team a mere $500 per game. That's $24,000 for the remainder of the season.
“(Our liquor licence) is something we don’t want to lose just for the sake of playing nice with another team that’s here in the city with us," Majors owner Scott Dart said.
There comes a time, when the Rippers and the Frontier League have to ask themselves, "Is it really worth playing baseball in London, Ontario?"
The legaue has had one franchise (the Werewolves) fail in the city. The ballpark is old. Judging by the attendance and what we've been reading out of London, the majority of the people in the city don't care about the Rippers or want them out of town. Traveling across the border is a pain. Getting passports for players on short notice, is troublesome.
“They said London was open for business. I brought mine down and all I’ve found is doors closed,” said Rippers manager David Martin, who also runs the day-to-day operations of the organization.
Sometimes, you need to admit you've made a mistake and move on, in this case, to another city.

The IBL in which the London Majors play, is not a beer league. It is the oldest amateur league in Canada and it started in 1919. What is going on re: beer controversy is a certain owner of a new team in town not doing his proper homework and now crying foul.
The IBL is not a beer league. If you had done your research you would know it is the oldest amateur league in Canada with the league starting in 1919. The beer controversy is due to the owner of a new team in London not doing his homework and researching things through. As a result, he is now crying foul.
The more I see the Bando Bunch, the less I like them. Michael looks and acts like a wise guy.
I don't really care if beer is sold, or not, in Ripperland. They should have factored that in when they entered the League.
Good News, for some of you. I am taking a BRIEF hiatus again from this blog. I will start posting again when I get to feeling better..
In the meantime, don’t believe anything that anybody from the Wild Things staff tells you (exception; Chris Blaine).. I was personally lied to by both Stu Williams, and Steve Zavacky. They feed me a lot of crap that I accepted as their word. Also, like an idiot, I accepted their word as their bond. It was all pure fertilizer. I have personally witnessed things at CEP this year that I was ‘guaranteed’ would not happen because they were putting a new system into place – sure! When you believe liars you can expect to be lied to. Modus operandi at CEP
Green Grass, stop by sometime, we can compare notes.

Amateur league that sells beer = beer league eh?
Tonight's published attendence was 1397.
Pitiful on a beautiful Sunday night.
On the positive side, the Wild Cubs will not be swept this series, but still will probably lose the series.
Why don't the box scores appear in the newspaper anymore?
We only ran boxscores from the home games. The O-R is currently in the midst of switching to a new content management system, and one of the changes is we've gone from using a Mac computer system to a PC system. Our Scoreboad page is still being paginated on the old Mac system, while I am writing on a PC. One of the problems we've encountered with two different kinds of computers is losing the tab fields in the boxscores during transmission. When we go fully PC, that should no longer be a problem. Hopefully, that will be by the next homestand and we'll have boxscores again.
Wild Cubs looked horrible again last night. The natives are getting restless.
How tough it must be for the radio broadcasting to try to find something positive to say about the Wild Things this year. A management team in complete disarray and an on field manager that doesn’t have a clue. I heard the broadcast guys admit that the season is already slipping away. They are wrong, the season has already slipped away in the hands of a college manager. Anybody for a change?
Please, a little respect. Don't insult us college managers like that.
Remember Lanny Franterie's dealing with alcohol after so many losing seasons with the Pirate.
I hope Radio Randy does not end up the same way with the way the Wild Cubs have played the last 4 or 5 years.
No way. Randy isn't that weak.
