Series leftovers

Some notes, thoughts and numbers that didn't get into the print edition during the Wild Things' series against Windy City:

* Surely, in all of baseball's written and unwritten rules, there has to be something about teams shouldn't wear the same colored jerseys. Prior to the opening game of the doubleheader Friday night, Windy City walks onto the Consol Energy Park field wearing royal blue jerseys and blue caps. The Wild Things, meanwhile, opt for their royal blue jerseys and blue caps. The uniform selections made it look like Trinity High School was playing an intrasquad game. Whatever happened to wearing gray on the road? At the very least, the visiting team shouldn't wear a colored jersey that matches any of the home team's jerseys.

* After the game Saturday, Washington signed Ryan Morrow, a switch-hitting catcher out of St. Mary's University in Texas. He has no professional experience. Morrow was drafted in the 44th round by Atlanta in 2010 but did not sign. As a junior, he batted .366 with 14 home runs and 65 RBI but his numbers dropped off (as they did for most players because of the change in bats) this year. Morrow hit .277 with three home runs and 29 RBI. It seems Morrow might have a decent arm because the opponents for St. Mary's stole only 39 bases in 59 games.

* From the How Did That Happen Department? comes this: Washington right fielder Luis Rivera entered the second game of Friday nigth's doubleheader with zero walks in 61 at-bats. Rivera then walked in each of his first three plate appearances against Windy City starter Luis Rivera.

* Former California University pitcher Randy Sturgill made his pro debut Friday night with the Lake Erie Crushers. Sturgill pitched one inning of relief in the Crushers' 3-2 loss at Rockford. He gave up two hits, one run and one walk.

Sturgill, a left-hander from Leechburg, was a two-time PSAC West Division West Pitcher of the Year. He holds Cal's single-season and career records for wins. He led the PSAC in wins, innings and strikeouts this spring, going 10-2 and two saves with a 2.23 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 84 2/3 innings.

Sturgill had another year of eligibility remaining at Cal but opted to leave early. There is a connection between Cal's athletic department and Lake Erie manager John Massarelli that got Sturgill a look from the Crushers.

* The Wild Things' rained out game in Joliet has not yet been rescheduled. It will be played as part of a doubleheader either Aug. 16 or 17 when the Slammers play their first series in Washington.

* Rough week with the bats: Washington hasn't scored more than two runs in an inning since last Sunday's win over Normal.

* When you have a team that is struggling to get hits and score runs, such as the Wild Things have been all season, is it better for the manager to pick a batting order and stick with it for an extended period, or should he change the order nightly? There are different theories about this. Washington's Darin Everson has opted to change the order with each game. He has used 25 different batting orders in 26 games, and five players have hit in five different spots in the lineup.

* That the Frontier League has had eight players (including two from the Wild Things) sold to major league organizations in the first month of the season, shows that what we speculated on this blog last month was true - the talent level in the league was up this year. At this point last year, only one player had his contract purchased.

Actually I thought the same about the uniforms the teams were wearing Friday. The Thunderbolts did have the road gray pants though.
Here is something I saw during Saturday’s game that sums up the Wild Things teams attitude. After giving up 6 runs in the sixth inning, three of the Wild Things players came off the field just laughing as if they just
went through a 1-2-3 inning. These guys should be ashamed of their poor performance – there sure as hell
wasn’t anything to be laughing about. I don’t mean they should be walking around with their heads hanging low, but I’m just saying it sure looked like they didn’t give a darn, but maybe…………………….
After sitting in the same place for all these years without ever saying a word, I saw a gentleman last night stand up and berate the team after that sixth inning. How dare Everson allow this sort of attitude to prevail on his team? Now his “ship” is floundering and his players don’t appear to much care.

As for the allowing of more than 13 experienced players, the Wild Things have always considered themselves to be, shall we say, entitled, or perhaps special.

I heard the Josh Banda was finally sent packing – is that a fact? It would sure be nice if they did the same to
that “dominant hitter”, Ernie Banks. I’m sick of all the K’s and pop flies. Ochoa is piling them up too. At least Blake makes good contact at times and has a fair amount of RBI’s.

It's a shame Vidal Nuno didn't gets signed a few days earlier by the Yankees, because Randy Sturgill would have been his ideal replacement.

I noticed Evansville released OF Vinnie Scarduzio. He smacked 31 homers in the Frontier League the last 2 seasons, but was struggling at .221 this season. Would it kill the Wild Things to give this guy a look? Come on, the ONLY 2 starting position players having good years are Lawson and Sidick. Windy City OF Brandon Anderson is another guy I wish the Things would have acquired. He seemed to always be tough against the Wild Things when he was with Kalamazoo. And last night was no exception: 2/5 with 3 stolen bases. This guy runs like a deer.

Great play last night by LF Derek Perren to rob Zach Aakhus of a 2 run double in the 3rd. It doesn't always show up in the newspaper or the box score.

The CUP connection with Lake Erie I assume is Ross Vecchio.
How is Ross doing.
Since leaving the Wild Things, he seems to have disappeared.
Also his Wild Things replacement has turned into the invisible man.
Every one knew who Ross was.

Don’t get eye strain looking for Todd Marlin. He isn’t even in the Commonwealth.
If we EVER see him again, I will be totally shocked.
Ross was visable but he wasn’t exactly Mr. Personality was he? The last I heard he
was still at Cal U working for Anglo Armente. I’ll say one thing for Ross, he sure picks a
lot of people to work for that are real,….. Well, Ill leave it at that!

in the hitter-friendly Frontier League, the wild things are now pounding the rawhide at a prodigious .226 clip....and they continue to do so despite the lack of a hitting coach...kind of amazing if you ask me, which you didn't.

kinda interesting that, against a walk-happy pitching staff like traverse city, with the go-ahead run on base in the ninth, the swing-happy things would give any batter a green light with 3-0 count. in the interest of fairness it must be granted that if anybody gets the "go-ahead" it would be chris sidick. but after a lousy 3-0 at bat by a teammate friday night, the things probably should have taken the bat out of the hands of "mr. everything"--at least historically speaking....

this team has about 10 days to fix it, or this season will have been allowed to skitter away into meaningless. five games with beach bums, three with rockford and three with the riverrats better play out 7-4 at least. otherwise, it's on to "hoping for steelers camp," "hoping the pirates remain 'in it,'"...

would a hitting coach really be too much to ask.....the only positive that's been seen so far is from the pitching coach....defense is lacking, baserunning is shaky, hitting should be renamed batting, cause there's been little actual hitting.

help is needed. time is short, 11 games before western trip...

that is the reason there was never any disciplinary action for the 2007 championship series post-game lockout of Chris Dugan---the connection between then-wild things manager john massarelli and then-wild things general manager ross vecchio...

obviously didn't pick up a hitting coach...did take 7 walks, but couldn't get a clutch hit, again...

and the winning run scores, for the second night in a row, on a wild pitch/passed ball...

and the countdown to obilivion stands at T-minus 9 days....

Can you believe a manager after 4 walks in a row, scoring the first run, would have the next batter hitting away on a 2 balls, no strike count?
Well, it happened tonight. He lost another one for the team.

wild things lose, to the beach bums, 2-1, and the rains...3 hits and another 1-run loss. And beach bums score, one in the first, one in the third, each on a two-out base hit...that's about as many as the wild things have all season...

T-minus 8 and counting...

"fire-proof"....

who's going to fire him? todd-gone forever already-marlin? this ownership group wouldn't know where to look, what to look for. heck, they don't even know they should be looking---for a hitting coach, for a general manager from the area, for an ownership group with a clue.

there are baseball people sitting in the stands every night who would not tolerate the "i" "me" aspects that have befallen this team. unfortunately, the "i" "me" ownership doesn't even recognize anything's wrong because that's their language.
