Sutton on the move

The Wild Things made their first major roster move of the offseason Tuesday when they announced that right fielder Matt Sutton, pictured, has been traded to the Lake Erie Crushers for future considerations.

Sutton, an excellent defensive right fielder, had an up-and-down career over three seasons with the Wild Things. He hit .295 with 12 home runs in his rookie season of 2007 and was the Wild Things' best hitter during the postseason. In 2008, he played in only 33 games before being suspended by manager Greg Jelks. Manager Mark Mason reinstated Sutton last year and the lefty batted .264 with 15 home runs. Sutton did strike out a career-high 82 times and hit only .181 (19-for-105) in July, but he rallied and batted .336 over the remainder of the season.

At Lake Erie, Sutton will be reunited with former Wild Things manager John Massarelli.

Washington also signed infielder Richard Michalek. A Pittsburgh Central Catholic and Slippery Rock University graduate, Michalek played in three games last year for the Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League. Michalek played second base, shortstop and outfielder at Slippery Rock, where he was a .355 career hitter. In 2008, Michalek was MVP in the Jayhawk League, a college summer league based in Kansas.

“We have gotten good reports on Rich,” general manager Ross Vecchio said. "We like his versatility. He can play anywhere on the field. He had a great career at Slippery Rock and will be given an opportunity to win a spot on our 2010 roster.”

The Wild Things also have announced that pitchers Craig Snipp and Nick Peterson have retired.

Good luck to Matt Sutton, he has an absolute cannon for an arm. Very inconsistent at the plate last year. But he was at his best in his rookie year with Maz, perhaps he achieves that again in Lake Erie.

Still no manager. With moves being made, it shows the manager has no imput.

breaking news out of CEP, on Wed the WWT management will hold a news conference to name the new team manager, none other than Pete Rose Jr!!

This is a great start by the new management, bringing in a name, instead of someone who knows this league, its players and the area of Washington (aka John Cahill)! looks like the downfall of the Wild Things continues into 2010

If you listen closely, you can hear the crickets at the ticket windows...

truly a shame that WWT missed such a great opportunity to turn the team over to a true professional, league all-star, previous coach of the year, league manager and all around great asset to the WWT organization and Frontier League.

Looks like General Bill Lee is still pulling the strings across the league.

I can see the promo's now, with Wheeling Island and the Meadows Casino and Pete Rose

21 years of being around a baseball field following your father does not make you a great coach. Or else I guess Michael Jordan's kids would be NBA Champions by now!

Wild Things Lawyers/Owners... you have no clue what you are doing... as evidenced by the last 16 months of your organization

If Pete Jr. comes here then it proves the new man in charge has a lot influence in independent league baseball.

According to what I've been told, there is no press conference scheduled for Wednesday and a decision on who will manage the team next year has not been made.

Now that's an interesting idea. How about if you win the game, then you get to come back and manage the next home game?

Something to realize gang...While his name is Rose, Pete Rose Jr has never been a coach let alone a manager at any professional level outside of giving private hitting lessons...Here's to hoping its not true...Not to mention he spent time in jail for steroid distribution...

steroid distribution are you serious!! Must have been a heavy duty dealer as he only got 30 days and no fine plus you could buy the stuff at gnc but does it really matter!! and let's not forget this team is not the yankees it's the frontier league he has more experience in baseball then half of the league players and coaches don't hate on him just because his dad beat your teams!!!! really guys

The word verification is working again this morning. Is this just a fluke or has it been fixed Chris?
What will happen first?
The W. T. naming a manager or the O-R fixing the word verification?

I know Anonymous has never been arrested. Been a source for the police but never arrested.

If Pete Rose Jr. is hired, maybe the Wild Things can have Convict Night as a promotion. The manager and his dad both could manage that night.

Since Mario was not able to purchase the pirates, perhaps he could purchase the Wild Things.
They could then flood the taxpayer turf and have winter hockey as an added benefit of mamimum use of the stadium with taxpayer turf rather than having the field sit idle between October and March.

Down to 2 finalists, Rose Jr and Darrin Evanston of the Marlins. Whoever comes in, it'll be obvious he won't have much control over the baseball operations with such a late start. May all be motive to keep the manager in less power and leave it to Ross.

on baseball alone it's not even a choice to make Rose is the one just look at the time and exp.. in baseball i hope they do the right thing as we need to win and i think Rose would get alot more respect from the players then everson at least i think so. I don't care what guys do off the field as we need a winner. All you guys forget we are talking about a baseball team so let's get a guy who knows baseball. I think Rose played in the bigs and Everson not even close plus Rose has played 21yes to 6 for everson come on Ross make the right decision!!
