Mason joins the Revolution

The Wild Things will have a new manager - their fourth in as many years - when the 2010 Frontier League season begins.

It was announced today that Mark Mason is leaving the Wild Things to become the pitching coach for the York Revolution of the independent Atlantic League. Mason started his pro coaching career in the Atlantic League with the Atlantic City Surf in 2001.

Mason guided the Wild Things to a 43-53 record and fourth-place finish in the East Division last season. A Waynesburg University and Canon-McMillan High School product, Mason managed four seasons in the Frontier League, two with the Chillicothe Paints (2007-08) and one with the Ohio Valley Redcoats (2005). While with Ohio Valley, one of Mason's pitchers was Chris Jakubauskas, who was was picked up on waivers Friday by the Pittsburgh Pirates after winning six games last season for the Seattle Mariners.

Mason also spent four seasons (2002-04 and 2006) as an assistant coach with the Wild Things and is a former head coach at Washington & Jefferson College.

Mason followed Greg Jelks (2008), John Massarelli (2004-07) and Jeff Isom (2002-03) as Wild Things managers.

York had a 53-87 record last year and its 4.88 ERA was second-worst in the league. York's manager is former Baltimore Orioles catcher manager Andy Etchebarren.

Hey Chris,
Any ideas on who would be the new manager? Or better yet, who do you think should be considered?

Jon Cahill should be the next manager. He is an experienced manager, and he understands this league and its players.

Cahill would probably be a good choice. He's a guy who has been involved in this league for as long as I can remember. He was a great player for the WWT, assistant coach in this league (I think he won Coach of the Year), Manager in Traverse City for 2 years and a coach for WWT This year. Well respected by his colleagues and former players

Cahill has to be a candidate. He has two years of managerial experience in the FL. Though his teams in Traverse City didn't make the playoffs, they weren't half bad – four games below .500 one year and four games above the other (missing the playoffs by one game). Jon's name will be there to the end. Don't expect a quick hire. They're going to take a long look at some people who have experience coaching in the affiliated ranks.

Cahill knows the league inside and out and got let go as manager in TC after finishing just one game out of the playoffs while their team slipped mightily this year...

Did MM leave on his own or was he not offered a contract?
I don't think it matters who manages the team. It looks like the playoff days of the Wild Things are past history.
Maybe they should name Ross the manager/general manager combined and let Joh Cahill manage the team on the road as head coach or someother make believe title.
In any case it is good to see the grass still growing at the field and give Steve Z. something to do in the spring.

I wish they would get the phony grass and ship Steve Z to Siberia.

Chris:
How come the word verification is not working 90% of the time making it impossible to post on this blog.
I am surprised it worked this time.

To be honest with you, I don't know. I have three different browsers and the verification problem seems to only happen with Internet Explorer. Anyone experience problems on Safari or Firefox?

Thank goodness for your Blog Chris. Although, I'm not so sure that this is a blog about Washington 's favorite baseball team. I'd say it's a blog for disgruntled WT employees and the ever so talented released players.

I use IE and Firefox. Word verification will not work on IE but no problem with Firefox. Same for my wife's computer, and for my neighbor.
