Avon calling: A taxing problem

Here's a link to a story about the city of Avon trying to get tax exempt status for 2009 for All Pro Freight Stadium, home of the Lake Erie Crushers.

According to the story, the city received a partial tax refund last year for the ballpark and the surrounding recreational complex and the state approved an exemption for 2009. However, there are questions as to whether the city misled the state on its prior application. Avon has field an amended application for 2009.

Here's the problem: The Ohio Revised Code exempts such a stadium from taxes if it is "used by a major league professional athletic team or a class A to class AAA minor league affiliate of a major league baseball team for a significant portion of its home schedule." The Crushers obviously are not affiliated with Major League Baseball.

According to Avon's mayor, tax exempt status for the ballpark will save the city $18,000 to $20,000 a year.

Perhaps we could send the Crushers our taxpayer turf too! Just think how nice it would be to get rid of ALL those damn tourist that are flocking to Washington to try to get a glimpse of CEP! Ever since the Washington County tourist folks decided to join with Ed Rendell and shower the Wild things with “OUR” money, it just hasn’t been the same! I’m sure you’ve all noticed how many tourists have been spending their money here haven’t you? If it were not for the Wild Things we wouldn’t have all those doctors’ offices and Senior Citizens home so near the ball yard. Not to mention ALLL the good things the Wild Things are doing to draw crowds to the Crown Center. Oh, I forgot, the Crown Center is going belly-up isn’t it?

You're right. They probably should take the whole Wild Things organization with the taxpayer turf and all and send them to Avon. The Wild Things are the worst things to happen to Washington County in decades. Bad baseball. Bad ballpark. Bad owners. Players who drink too much. Owners who make too much and charge too much. They take OUR money. If the Wild Things and Rendell didn't spend OUR money you know the state would be saving it for something worthwhile like feeding the homeless or helping to lower taxes. If the Wild Things weren't around the Crown Center would be thriving and we wouldn't have to drive up that damn hill to get to Angelo's.

If Avon has to pay taxes, how come
CEP is considered a non profit and tax exempt.
Living in the Trinity School District, if they paid property taxes, maybe my property taxes for both the school district and Washington County could go another year without a tax increase.
Has any action taken place on the taxpayer turf?
Wait and see, I bet they will try to have some of the slots money used for tax payer turf.
Thanks for getting the word verficaton fixed. For several days no one could post.

I don’t know whether you are talking about CEP or the Wild Things. I don’t understand all the ‘legalese’ involving CEP, BSI, and the Wild Things. Also, I don’t even care! If you ask the Wild Things, they will plead poverty. IF that is true, which I doubt, it’s primarily their own damn fault! They treat customers as if they were raw meat. I can’t tell you how many people I have talked to that they (the Wild Things) have pissed-off this last season. or two. Their method of dealing with people that they don’t like (I am definitely one of those people so I speak from experience), is to try make you as uncomfortable as possible while at the game. One of their rocket scientists employees approached me and said somebody complained that I was bringing food into the park. This friggin jerk gave me a hard time over two little soda crackers. Crap, you would have thought he was Sherlock Holmes! Hell, I didn’t even TRY to hide it! Of course, I had previous permission to bring that into the park and the “Adam Henry” spent the rest of the season trying NOT to let me see him. Just another coward – NO way you can respect one of those types.

So, if they need tax exempt status to survive, no need to feel sorry for them because almost all their problems are self-inflected.
