Laurent out for season

Washington received some bad news late Tuesday afternoon when left fielder Phil Laurent was diagnosed with a torn ACL and slight tear of the meniscus in his right knee. He will be out for the remainder of the season.

An MRI revealed the extent of the injury, which was suffered in a game at Florence during the recently concluded road trip.

"I feel bad for Phil," Washington manager Mark Mason said. "The MRI showed the slight tear in the meniscus, and they couldn't even find the ACL it had been torn so badly. When they drained the knee they found blood, which means a torn litgament."

Laurent has been a valuable pickup for the Wild Things. He was signed early in the season after being released by River City. In 49 games with the Wild Things, Laurent was sixth in the league in hitting with a .335 average, 8 home runs and 40 RBI. Against left-handed pitchers, the lefty swinging Laurent was batting .515 (17-for-33) with three home runs.

Laurent was injured while trying to collide with the Florence catcher on a play at the plate. Some might say it was a "turf injury" because Florence's Champion Window Field is an all-turf surface. Even the dirt areas of the infield are turf.

"Phil tried to plant his right foot, and when he did that he felt his knee turn to the inside," Mason said. "We were hopeful that it wasn't bad. There was only a little bit of swelling."

Mason said he is actively looking for an L2 who can play the outfield. In the meantime, Josh Blackstock will play left field. Blackstock played 32 games in the outfield last year for Mason while with the Chillicothe Paints.

"We'll look for the best player available," Mason said. "If we find an experienced guy, we'll go that route. If not, we'll rework what we have."

Washington made several roster moves Tuesday. Pitcher A.J. Jenkins (1-2, 9.53) was released and right-handed pitcher Chris Kupillas was signed. Kupillas was 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 9 games with Traverse City before being released.

I wonder how many injuries will be caused by the taxpayer turf next year at the Washington stadium not only by the Wild Things, but also visiting teams.
Are you ready to change your vote Mr. Gregg?

Its pretty convienent that Chris somehow quit leaving the attendance out of his article each game now. FL site says 2,812 last night, if that is the case, they must have been counting fingers!! There was no where near that many people there. Front office is really struggling to make it look like they are successful.

Another fine coaching job by Mason last nite. And he's suppose to be a pitching coach. How many games have been lost because of his use of pitchers. The home run in the bottom of the 9th called foul turned out to be big. The umpires looked really scared when Mason came out of the dugout to blow them a kiss.

Some might say it was an awkward step by the runner in an attempt to make a sudden and late change of direction to create or avoid a significant collision.

Players get hurt on grass. Players get hurt on turf. Heck, some major league dude blew out his ankle the other night walking down the dugout steps...

Thanks to Mylan Labs for the Mark Mason bobble-head.
Now, what do all of you think about the unhealthy relationship between Mylan Labs, the Washington Wild Things, and a certain Local State Representative? Believe me, we are working on it. We are hopeful it will blow the lid off the taxpayer turf thing. Something is rotten in Denmark and it really stinks. Add Bob Gregg to the mix with the conflict of interest he obviously has when it comes to his unethical “yes” vote for the turf. If the Wild Things are so good for North Franklin Township how do you account for the decline of the Crown Center? Most of the new buildings near CEP are medical buildings. I’d say that is ironic because they make our group sick.

Why would a player want to play in Washington?
Washington has the longest bus rides in the league.
Adding taxpayer turf next year will also increase injuries.
However it will be fun for bull riding, concerts, and other non baseball events.
How many more years does the Wild Things contract commit them to play in Washington?
I think that needs to be answered before taxpayer turf in installed.
Chris, do you have a way of finding out?
I bet Leo knows.

I challenge anyone to put together a worse defensive infield at any level of play.

just talking def.
1b banks. love the bat but i have seen statues play better first base. the guy isnt in shape and fields NOTHING he has to bend over for.
2b Parker. If it isn't hit right at him he doesn't have much of a chance on making a play.
ss grandstrand. he is 30% the defensive player he was last season. you can hang the last 2 games on granny. doesn't make nearly half the plays he made last season
3b psomas. can't catch a cold down there. and if he does he sure as hell can't make the throw.

don't be so quick to blame the pitchers. the last 2 nights, they did their job, they got ground balls.

The real problem is this team stinks. It has bad pitching, bad defense, bad baserunning, bad coaching and bad ownership. If ever there was a clunker this team is it.

If you want a blueprint for how to f-up a baseball organization, just look at the Wild Things. This group is on a downward spiral that's not going to stop until it hits bottom. It's not going to get any better until major changes are made.

That had to be the most boring thing in the history of the WT. She contributed NOTHING at all. She did manage to plug some company that was stupid enough to invest a few buck for a "green" shopping bag gave-away. Then she thought we were so dumb not to know what "green" means so, she explained that too! She told us how much this stupid company loves Washington. RIGHT! If they really loved Washington they would run from ANY involvement with this band of tax treasury robbing low life idiots. If they don’t acknowledge the people that are buying the new turf by actually calling it “Tax Payer Turf”, then we should sue them. Next thing you know Barack will bail them out with our tax money. Some of the lawyers for Mylan Labs in Canonsburg are also part of the ownership group of the Wild Things.
The Wild Things wanted plastic turf but did not want to have to actually pay for it. Tim Solobay happens to
like the Wild Things, he also just happens to be the Representative for the Canonsburg area. So, use your imagination for a minute. Mylan is a very large player in generic drugs – lots of influence. Solobay is their State Rep and he wants to be a career politician. He also knows there just MIGHT be some State funds available----Viola’ Money is found for some good old plastic grass. Now, there has to be some matching funds for the Washington Country Tourism people. Next thing you know a person that just happens to broadcast Wild Things games on WJPA thinks that is a good idea. Just like Magic, it all comes together.
How obvious does it have to be for any semi-intelligent person to figure it all out? Even Swisscheda could probably add this all up.
My guess is that it is all just coincidence. What about you?

I have not posted here for some time but I feel it necessary to do so now. If the Wild Things find out who is putting this ‘turf’ stuff on this blog, they will screw with you every chance they get. They will watch your every move at the ballpark and make every effort to belittle you as they possibly can. If your not prepared to be hassled, then don’t post anything here that will present the Wild Things as anything but GREAT!
Otherwise, you will be given a lot of grief. We have opposed this taxpayer turf in a public way ever since it went down. Now we know just how vindictive they can be firsthand. We are experiencing it EVERY time we attend a game. Since I don’t much care how they feel about me they can just hassle to their heart’s content. For the rest of you, BEWARE OF WHAT YOU POST HERE!
We will continue to attend games even though they have made it very clear that we are not welcome. We go to watch baseball, not to applaud the ‘front office” for every move they make. There are already enough brown nosers to do that. If the Wild Things want the artificial turf, then let them pay for it NOT the taxpayers!
Don’t know about the Mylan thing, and don’t really want to know.

It seems no one knows or is willing to answer.
I think this should be know before any taxpayer money is used for taxpayer turf. The fact that the Wild Things won't pay for it leads me to think the legal commitment must not be very long.
Perhaps it is only year to year.

swiss,

hopefully you will keep posting, I really enjoyed the baseball talk. However, as much as I respect your opinions on the game, not even you could come to defabio's defense tonight. God awful peformance.

Four batters were announced wrong when they weren't up and 2 of our players were announced even though Lake Erie was batting.

The worst though was his homerun call and all his reading, even though play was still going on and the ball didn't come close to leaving the yard.

If he got paid tonight for that performance , then i want a job like that. To be able to get paid no matter how bad you perform at your job.

From now on I am listening to Randy call the game on the radio.

Remember that rat Solobay had a big party up there last night and DiFabio was probably as crap faced as the rest of them.
If any of you people still think there isn't something to the story about the "relationship" between Milan, Solobay, and the WTs, then you are just plain blind, or you just WON'T see it.
Looks as if we have another upstart career politition on our hands. Of course this one won't be for sale, right? It sure can't hurt Mylan to have a little more political influence in Harrisburg, can it?

Some of you Wild Things apologist complain about what he says but no one has ever proven him wrong on anything of subsistence he has ever posted. I was there when the Wild Things employees jumped his, and his wife’s rear-ends a few weeks ago. It was both shocking and disgusting. How could they EVER justify that sort of crude treatment? Dutch seemed so embarrassed that he stuttered when he did his next between innings stunt.
Those of us that saw what happened had our eyes opened as to how much the Wild Things hate this man. Those of you that didn’t see it probably would not believe it if you were told about it. These Wild Things management people deserve whatever negative things that happen to them.
The Wild Things seem to have never heard the old saying “By your actions, so be you known”. They have however heard of “To get along, Go along”.

Don't need to check with anyone on this one: You can have more than one blown save in a game, but obviously they can only come from multiple pitchers, such in the Wild Things' game a few nights ago when Keith Meyer and Nick Peterson each had a blown save. It's rare that a game has more than one blown save by a team, but it does happen. In fact, it happened for the third time in the FL this season last night when Windy City had two pitchers with blown saves.

The Wild Things management has told me that Chris is very haapy with the way he has been treated. Here is the exact quote:
"In terms of the mess in Windy City, you know only half of the story, if you speak to Chris Dugan, you'll find that the Wild Things' organization dealt with the issue privately in a prompt fashion. What the public saw, heard, and believed is not necessarily reality." I will NOT name the source for that informatiom because it would violate a confidence. (I DON'T, as do the Wild Things, tell lies!)
Now if the above is really true, then Chris must enjoy being blamed for the Wild Things failures!

My family is from West Virginia, and nobody that lives in that great state is as ignorant as most of the individuals that post on this blog. The people in the Washington area don't appreciate that they even have a team here. If the Wild Things leave town, the area will be hard-pressed to get another franchise. If I owned a team, I know I'd be looking for locations other than Washington based on the negative attitudes of so many of its residents.

Speaking of negative attitudes, if you looked up "curmudgeon" in the dictionary, you would see a picture of Ron Wilson. I do not know him personally, nor do I ever want to. The man could suck the life right out of a circus. He is the only person that goes BY HIS OWN FREE WILL to a sporting event, and then complains about having to sit through it. What a fool. He should understand that you can kick and scream all you want, but that doesn't mean you can intimidate people to do what you want. Typically, people stop throwing tantrams before they get discharged from the military.

As for the blog itself, I do enjoy the baseball talk on here. Some of it is quite insightful, especially when fans offer their own opinions based on what they see and hear out on the field. It's definitely been an interesting season following the ups and downs of this team. There's still time to turn it around, but the guys better kick it in gear. Stranger things have happened. That's the beauty of sports.

Thanks for reading,
