Two headed to all-star game

Two Wild Things have been voted to the Frontier League's 17th annual all-star game, which will be played July 15 at Road Ranger Stadium in Loves Park, Ill., with the Rockford RiverHawks as hosts.

Corner infielder Grant Psomas was chosen as a backup infielder and closer Nick Peterson also was selected to the East Division team. Psomas entered the Wild Things' game Sunday at Kalamazoo with a .275 batting average and teams highs of 11 home runs and 37 RBI. Peterson has an 0-2 record with six saves and a 5.94 ERA. He has 29 strikeouts in 16.2 innings.

The two managers for the all-star game will add three players of their choosing to their respective teams. This will likely happen Thursday.

Wow!
Talent must be really low this year in the Frontier League.
Does one person from each team have to be on the all star team like the rule the major leagues have?
That would be the only reason either of the two should be on the team.

I can understand Psomas being on the All Star team, but Peterson??
With an ERA of over 5, and an 0-2 record, it seems a bit of a strech doesn't it?
Did they have to include a pitcher, or what?
If not, why not send Dempsey?

No, one player does not have to be voted onto the all-star team from each FL club.

And Ron (good to see you back again), there is only one spot on the ballot for a DH. That spot went to Lake Erie's Gordon Gronkowski, who has a slightly higher batting average but a couple of HRs and RBI fewer than Dempsey. My guess is Dempsey will be added as one of the manager's selections later this week.

Peterson's selection reminds me of the year that Pittsburgh Pirates' closer Mike Williams made the all-star team despite a hideous ERA. Dempsey is really the only player on the Wild Things that deserves to go. You could make a good argument for Laurent, but his lack of at-bats hurts his chances. Psomas seems to be back, great!

Is anybody noticing that John Massarelli has his Lake Erie Crushers sitting pretty at 7 games over .500? And for all intents and purposes, they are an expansion team. Only 1 player on the current roster was with Chillicothe last season. A quick check of the pitching stats reveals some fine ERAs. Give credit where it's due.

two things, cheda:
"...a good argument for Laurent, but his lack of at-bats hurts his chances." so does his abominable defense...

"..John Massarelli...his Lake Erie Crushers...only 1 player on the current roster was with Chillicothe last season..." perhaps the people who selected the "other" Paints players a year ago are the problem...oh, wait, one of them is managing the wild things now.

The WT had several arms last year with the ability to get outs that were released prior to the start of camp. Any reason why those same guys aren't being considered? Maybe they just aren't any better, I don't know. Heck, I don't even remember half of their names, but I know they had some guys who could throw strikes and get a few outs here and there.

All of the Wild Things problems this year is the penality for accepting taxpayer funds for the taxpayer turf being used by a for profit organization.
How long is the Wild Things legal commitment to play in tax payers stadium?
I fear in a few years, Cal. U. and Trinity high school will be the only users of taxpayer stadium.

WASHINGTON WILD THINGS: Released OF Chris Demons and RHP Sean Heimpel
(From the Frontier League site)

No announcement on who will replace them yet. Chris Raniere should come off the DL this week. I would think that Busti is the obvious guy to go.

Aaron Guinn is eligible to come off disabled list for Tuesday night's game. Raniere, if my cyphering is correct, can't come off the DL until Wednesday. With Demons released, an L1 pitcher could be signed.

Oh wait never mind. You don't know anything because your next statement was "bring Ian Snell to Washington". Snell would DEFINITELY help team dynamics being a poor leader and headcase. Duncecap.

That one is a head scratcher. I know the Wild Things don't stand in the way of a player advancing to affiliated ball, but the American Association is an independant league.

One of the starting pitchers the WT are likely to face either tonight or Wednesday will be Ryan Bird, who is a Western Division all-star. 6-0, 1.62 ERA, and a whopping 49-9 strikeouts/walks ratio. Talk about control! It will be interesting to see how our power hitters do against this guy.

Franni could care less if they win as long as you all keep coming thru the gate spending your hard earned money and making her and her lawyer buddies rich. So come one come all Washington help Franni out. Since you paid for her turf (and she thanks you)she can focus on what to do with all the money she is raking in. Come on people WAKE UP this organization doesn't care about the community, just taking its money.

Here's an idea get rid of Sidick & Grandstrand.Neither one of those guys are doing anything this year.
Smart move dumping Heimpel, nothing more than a B.P. pitcher.Demons is another Sidick a fast guy who can't hit.I still think you can trade Banks to a team in another league for some pitching.Joey D,don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out.He showed up thought he was the man and did absolutely nothing but waste a roster spot like most of the pitching staff...

richard i agree with getting rid of Sidick, but the WTs will never do it. They wont drop a local guy that they dont have to find a host family for. I dont agree with dumping Granstrand though. Hes one of the leaders on this team and you cant knock his defensive ability at shortstop.

And as far as Banks goes, the WTs should def find someway to get rid of him for a pitcher, the guy seems to be a virus the team cant win with. Before you go jumping all over this for being racist (Jamal). Look at the stats 6-18 with him in the line-up, 10-8 without him. From what i heard he's basically another Robbie Knapp, "I'll get mine you get yours" attitude. Doesn't care if the team wins or looses as long as he gets his stats

Hey Chris Dugan, any word on who they are bringing in to fill the L1 roster spot, please say a pitcher

Two thoughts after reading this thread:

1. Does Franni even know what the team's record is?

2. Does any team in this league have quality pitching that they're willing to trade?

I'm afarid the answer to both is no.

Hey super genius, you don't have to trade with a team in this league.

hate to be the one to say it, but Mason obviously has no control over these players. They all have the "I'm only worried about me" attitude, none of them hustle all of the time, the pitchers hang with the pitchers, the position players seperate themselves. There is no team bond here, you can ses it on the field before and after every game

I haven't spoken to anyone from the Wild Things today, so I don't know the pitcher(s) they are signing. But, just for fun, I'll put on a director of baseball operations hat and make an educated guess. We'll see later today if I get it right or swing and miss.

The L1 spot could be filled by a guy named Chad Wagler. He was recently released by Houston and made it to Class AA this year, though he's still only an L1. I know he was on the Wild Things' radar during the offseason and fits their mold because he played at Kent State and is listed as being from Hartville, Ohio, roughly two hours from Washington.

They also could be bringing in a pitcher named Jeff Dennis, who played at Binghamton University with Zach Groh.

About trading with other leagues, one thing you have to know is some of the indy leagues have waivers. That means if you want to trade for a front-of-the-rotation pitcher in, let's say, the Northern League, that pitcher must first clear waivers. If he's a quality starting pitcher, then he's not going to clear waivers. I know the Northern League and Can-Am League require a player to clear waivers before being traded to another league. The Atlantic League also is tough to trade with because the majority of its starting pitchers are too old for the Frontier League.

Well, I struck out on my two guesses for the new pitchers.

The Wild Things added four pitchers to the roster for tonight's game. As expected, Aaron Guinn was activated from the DL.

Signed were right-handed pitchers Rob Hedrick and Keith Meyer along with lefty Aaron Jenkins.

Hedrick is a former California University player who was with the team in spring training but among the final cuts in camp.

Meyer (6-4, 180) is a Pittsburgh native and was drafted in the 15th round by Seattle in 2007. He's a Schenley High School graduate. Meyer was 4-5 in two-plus seasons in affiliated ball. This year, he played in three games for the Lansing Lugnuts (I love that team name) and was 0-0 with a 7.50 ERA. He struck out five and walked one in six innings before being released.

Meyer is classified as an L1.

Jenkins (5-8, 180) played at Northern Iowa University and was a 26th round pick of Oakland in 2007. He spent one year in affiliated ball and then bounced around the independent circuit. This year, he pitched in 11 games for Grand Prarie of the American Association and one game for Gary of the Northern League.

Washington must be setting a record tonight by having 14 active pitchers.

Outstanding game tonight. Schindling went up against Southern Illinois' ace Ryan Bird and matched him. 7 and 1/3 innings, 1 run, 4 hits, 1 walk and 1 hit batsmen. Excellent debut outing by new reliever Keith Meyer as well. We need more efforts like this!

Play of the game was Chris Sidick's outstanding run-into-the-wall catch in the top of the 5th. It saved 2 runs and ended the inning. It won't show up in the box score but it sure was a treat.

Bird dominated 2 of our power hitters. Psomas went 0-3 with 2 K's against Bird (0-4, 3 K's overall), and Dempsey went 0-3 with 3 K's. The lone exception? Ernie Banks with a homer, and a double (thrown out going for a triple), and his only out fell just a few feet short of the fence. This guy hits a ton.

I attended tonight's game, and sat extremely close to Banks. I'll tell you this, if he does have this alleged "bad attitude", I sure didn't see it. I asked his critics to elaborate and I've read no evidence to support the claims. I did the research to find the record with/without him in the lineup. But as I said, the pathetic lack of quality starts is far more responsible for the lousy record than anything. I'm hoping they reel off a long winning streak to prove the Banks stat is a fluke. If he stays here the rest of the season, I think he'll lead the team in homers.

2 final notes, great performance by the mascot tonight. And folks, how about silencing your cell phones before the anthem? Have some respect. That young lady hit one bad note but recovered nicely. Excellent singing.

Why take the starter out after 7.1? If you can send him out there to get the first batter of the inning out in two pitches, why not leave him out there to at least get the next two outs?

Bird vs. Ian Snell would have made for a great pitching match-up

You can’t be serious? I do not appreciate that term being used in any fashion.

Maybe it’s because I still have my number on my forearm, but I do not think high school kids, lawyers, or whomever should be equated to such a term.

For someone who holds their time in the service with such reverence, I would think that you would have more respect for the people and soilders who did have to deal with Nazis; apparently not.

Leave the game day workers, parking kids, and alike alone.
