Billyball

Had a chance to talk to Florence manager Toby Rumfield about a few topics last night, including Freedom second baseman Billy Mottram, pictured, who hit for the cycle against the Wild Things. Mottram became the first Frontier League player to hit for the cycle in a game in Washington.

Mottram is leading the league in home runs (15) and is third in RBI (37).

Rumfield spent two years as a scout for the Kansas City Royals, so I asked him what major league scouts like and dislike about Mottram.

"The knock is his defense," Rumfield said. "That's the only knock you can put on him."

Mottram has committed 11 errors, which is very high number when you consider he plays home games on an artificial turf surface at Champion Window Field. You don't get bad and unpredictable bounces on turf like you do on grass.

"But he still makes good defensive plays for us," Rumfield continued. "We feel like he's irreplaceable. He can hit for average, hit for power and he has speed. He steals bases and he runs well."

Mottram was a late-round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2007 out of Dowling College in New York. He had only 21 hits in 134 at-bats (.157) in his one season in the Cubs' system and was released. Last year, he hit 10 home runs in 90 games for Florence, but his hitting has reached another level this season.

"A player is supposed to get better each season, and Billy has," Rumfield said. "His approach at the plate this year is good. He has a plan in mind each time he goes to the plate and he executes that plan. The bat hasn't been the question with him."

Rumfield said he expects interest from scouts in Mottram to pick up during the Frontier League's all-star break later this month.

A quality start tonight that was wasted by defense and another wild performance by the bullpen.
Its going to be a long season.
What was the attendence tonight?
I don't know how the Pirate and Wild Things announcers keep their sanity while broadcasting their respective games.

Now we know, The Wild Thing is really the bullpen!
This is not a question so an exclamation point is appropriate!

Toward the end of the broadcast tonight, I thought Bob Gregg was turning into Harry Doyle ("Major League"), and I do mean that as a compliment. He called it the way it was, beyond ugly.

Chris Dugan, where would you rate tonight's loss among the most pathetic performance ever by a Wild Things team? And what would your choice for all time worst be?

I'm pretty sure both of the home runs Florence hit tonight haven't landed yet, as of 12:15AM.

Congrats to Ernie Banks. Ernie, you are now officially the biggest scum bag in the history of the WT. That beautiful act after you dropped the foul ball was just a wonderful thing to behold. The kids along the right field line were treated to some great 'adult foul mouth', and a temper tamtram besides! Thanks so much for that!
Your a great example of what a parent hopes his/her child will NOT turn out to be.
Ernie, you are just another jerk that that won't ever really grow up.
WT, your just as bad as Ernie for putting up with this horses patute just because he may hit some home runs. We all know your scared out of your knickers about Jamal.
Next years season ticket for me? No thanks, I've had enough of this sort of stuff.

bye, laura. don't let the door hit you on the way out. ernie's language can not be excused, but neither can the rest of the team's lack of caring. shortstop was laughing after pitiful throw.

To find a performance worse at home than last night, I don't have to go back very far. Tuesday night was worse than last night. Washington played well for six innings last night. Easily the worst performance from a WTs team had to be Game 5 of the playoff series against Chillicothe in 2005 (I think that was the year). There were a few other clunkers, like a game a year or two ago when Windy City hit 6 home runs. And don't forget the blowout loss at home last year to Midwest, after which Jelks went on a tirade in the clubhouse.

Ernie has been back for only two games and has twice shown that he hasn’t learned a thing.
He has a HUGH chip on his shoulder and will, sooner or later, self-destruct.
I don’t much care about him and the sooner he’s gone from here, the better.
Just a run of the mill nitwit attitude case. Probably thinks he is Barry Bonds, Jr.
Just show how desperate the WT are.

Now where are all the guys that know all the inside stuff when it comes to Ernie Banks? Team and management don't like himand other stuff like that! They like him enough to let him continue to make an ass of himself with his moody crap!
A bad season just gets worse with his idiot on the team.

i'm with you. rather have a swearing, hustling, angry-that-he-didn't-make-tough-play first baseman than a laugh-it-off-bad-throw shortstop or shoulder-shrugging clueless-how-to-play-a-shorthop secondbaseman any day. i wish somebody would dump a table, break a bat over their knee, barrel over a catcher, plunk an opposing batter, turn the air blue at a teammate, something to show that somebody gives a damn about winning on this team.

OK, I won't tell you that.
However, yes, thet did think this was a very good team. Grandsrand is an aduquate SS that know how to play the game. Throwing a hissy fit over an error doesn't change a thing
I'd like to see that little boy Ernie start that crap when one of his team mates does something wrong. Ernie just thinks it's all about him. Just like Obama, Ernie is NOT the saviour!

The Wild Things have taken a page out of the Pirates book.
The team stinks but the Wild Things are still fourth in attendance
in the Frontier League.
They screw up everything from the parking to concessions to their
play on the field, and everything in between. Yet the morons just keep coming
to CEP. Go figure!

i attended my first wild things game tonight, as i just moved to town this winter and i dont see what you guys have to complain about. i have been to minor league games everywhere and the environment was great. good ballgame, exciting music and videos kept the crowd into the game. the between innings stuff was also entertaining. it's a minor league game and thats as good as a time as ive had anywhere. my wife and i will definitely return next homestand

i agree with your point on the atmosphere tonight. very entertaining, but fortunately the game was a good one. lately the play has been so bad that there has been nothing to get excited about. hopefully more of that to come

and as far as people bitching and complaining, some of these people have nothing else better to do with their lives than bitch about the team. they feel like they are owed something because they go to the games. they dont realize that the wild things owe us nothing more than a ballgame and a good time at the ballpark

If that's true, then I sure could use my lawn mowed, my car washed and propane for my grill (cookout on the 4th you know). Where's the Wild Things with my payback? They owe me that much. Damn guys are off playing ball instead of catering to my needs. Can you believe that? They should at least have the interns out painting my house.
