Record night

The Evansville Otters set a team attendance record Thursday on Fireworks Night as the River City Rascals beat the Otters, 3-1. A crowd of 7,782 showed up at historic Bosse Field (pictured, but the photo is not from last night). This was the largest crowd for an Otters game, and with Bosse being the largest ballpark in the league, I'm assuming this was the biggest crowd to watch a Frontier League game.

Rockford also had a big gate Thursday as attendance at Road Ranger Stadium was 5,677 for the RiverHawks' 6-2 win over Gateway.

The largest crowd for a game in Wild Things history is 6,820, also at Bosse Field, July 24, 2004. The largest crowd at Consol Energy Park - and this is a record that is unlikely to be broken because was simply too many people in the ballpark that night - was 4,247 for a game against Florence Aug. 23, 2003.

Rockford also had a big gate Thursday, as the attendance at Road Ranger Stadium was 5,677 for the RiverHawks' 6-2 win over Gateway.

the boys are gonna get hot. very soon. and when they do, and win 6-7 in a row, then do it again, we'll have full houses (not 4200, mind you) again at falconi/consol/the house that leo misbuilt. five great six game home stands still on the schedule. get your tickets while you still can.

Their streak didn't start tonight.
Losing 2 out of 3 at home will make an attendance of 2000 seem good.
Next year the taxpayers turf will help draw the crowd.
Bob Gregg, when you broadcast home games, do you still get a free supper at the buffet behind the press box. I heard Franni cut out this fringe benefit and only people who pay for tickets in the corporate boxes can eat. No longer press box, scorers and other employees upstairs.
I heard you talking about the meal in the past, but not this year.
Also, the parking disaster is do to some of the employees letting their friends in free in the past. Now with the ticket control and a second person taking the stub, no one parks for free except the employees, players, and press pass people. Pretty soon they will be changing Chris Dugan to park, but the O-R will pick up the tab when he turns in his expense account.

If anyone sees a state rep. or state senator at the ballpark, or around town, ask them why they aren't in Harrisburg getting the state budget passed.
I would vote to give back the state grant for the taxpayer turf to be used to reduce the Pa. deficit instead of raising the state income tax rate or increase the sales tax.

Another reminder to Mark Mason: Don't pitch Hempel, you lose every time he pitches.

how heimpel is on this team is beyond belief. are you telling me they couldn't find anyone better. maybe he impressed during camp but he has been awful. era in the 8's and more walks than k's. unbelievable how he keeps a job

I can't figure out how most of the pitchers on this team keep their job. You have to try to put together a pitching staff this bad. Were they putting the ball on a tee for K-zoo tonight?

Heimpel should carry a white flag with him on his journey from the bullpen to the mound, because when he comes in you know the game is OVER. 9.25 ERA in 36 innings?? He should have been released during the short recent home stand. Is he blackmailing Ross Vecchio to stay on the roster?

Questions for anybody, because it's obvious some of the participants of this blog have inside connections to the Wild Things. Question #1....are there any plans to televise any WT games on FSN Pittsburgh this season? And what is the reason no games were televised last year?

Question #2....are there any plans for Jason to do any games as the mascot this season? Has he moved away from the area? What was the reason for his departure?

Chris Dugan, I recently read some of the old topics of this blog. There is one from either June 13 (or perhaps July 13?) 2008 called "Where Is Everybody"? That first post you made is excellent, would you consider bringing it up again? Also, are there any whispers of more possible changes to the pitching staff? I can't believe they didn't make 1 or 2 changes before leaving for Michigan. More questions coming later, I want to keep this short. Hope everybody had a great 4th, and thanks in advance for your reply.

Jason will not return. He has decided to move on with his life.
He still lives in the area and was at the game a few nights ago.

Richard Lee:
With Ernie Banks in the starting lineup, the Wild Things are 6-17. Without him (suspension or injury), their record is 10-8. Those are the stats. My opinion, as always, is the pitching is responsible for their horrible record. Banks can hit a ton. I never met the man, so I have no opinion about his attitude. But if you can trade him or Psomas for some badly needed starting pitching, do it.

Thanks for the Jason info, maybe it was actually him who replied? If not, please tell him thanks for the memories. Greatest mascot I've ever seen, bar none.

If those numbers are right Swisscheda then there must be something going on in the locker room with Banks and the other players.

I am by no means blaming it all on Banks because most (if not all) of the blame has to fall on the pitching staff/ coaching, but the numbers don't lie. To have a winning team the players have to vibe together, maybe they cant do that with Banks around. The atmosphere in the locker room can't be good right now, especially dropping 7 of the last 10. So im with you Swisscheda, trade away Banks for a solid Starting Pitcher, or a reliable Closer once Raniere gets off IR. So you'll have Psomas at 1st, Raniere at 2nd, Grandstrand at SS and Parker at 3rd (he doesnt have the range for a 2nd baseman)

What do you think?

while that makes total sense, most teams know that they are dying to get rid of him so i doubt anyone ponies up a quality starter for banks. we can only hope it happens though. we have to get arms somehow

Brian, at this point I think I'd be willing to trade the entire team to Kalamazoo for CF Brandon Anderson. Today he was 3-4 with 4 runs scored, a homer, 2 RBI and 3 stolen bases. Is it too early to crown these guys the champions? By comparison, our leadoff hitter/centerfielder has been in a season long slump. I keep saying "he'll come out of it" but it's been 42 games now, and he's not even at .200. He's one of the 3 "veteran" classifications on this team. Does anybody think it's possible he could go in place of an experienced starting pitcher? Or do they wait longer because he's a local guy?

I did some more digging on Sean Heimpel, because he's been getting a lot of heat on the blog. The Wild Things are 3-7 in the 10 games in which he's appeared.

Perhaps Banks is a chemistry killer, any of you folks with inside info care to shed any light? The record is now 6-18 with him in the starting lineup. Again I stress that I've never met him, just asking his critics to elaborate some more.

Yet another NON quality start today, that statistic alone explains why they're 10 games under .500. Ugh.

you people kill me....ernie banks returns, plays his backside off, delivers time after time after time, and it's his fault the starters can't figure out they are supposed to throw strikes....oh, what's the use?

Hmmmm.Things seem to be getting turned around, then Banks returns and it all goes strait down the drain. The pitching is horrible but the teams record speaks for itself.
All Ernie does is swing for the fences.Trade him and get some sort of pitching. The trade doesn't have to be with a Frontier League team, they can trade with another independent league team.Heck Sidick and Grandstrand can go to.Neither one has done much to impress this year.
