Checking up on 3 more former Wild Things

Notes about three more former Wild Things players:

* Outfielder Stewart Ijames (2013-14) had a big night in Game 1 of the Class A California League semifinal series Saturday night between Visalia and San Jose. Playing for the Visalia Rawhide, Ijames went 3-for-4 with a double, run and two RBI. He hit a tiebreaking, two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning and came around to score after a walk and single.

Ijames began the season with Visali, was promoted to Class AA Mobile, where he played very well, then was sent back to Visalia late in the regular season. I assume that was because Visalia had already clinched a playoff berth and Mobile would not be playing in the Carolina League's postseason.

* Pitcher Vidal Nuno (2011) struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed just one hit over seven innings Wednesday as Seattle blanked Texas, 1-0. Nuno has a 1-2 record and a 2.79 ERA in 31 games (six starts) this season. It was the first win for Nuno in 45 outings.

* Pitcher Matt Sergey is not the only former Wild Things pitcher on a scoreless streak. Reliever Al Yevoli (2012-14) has thrown 15 consecutive scoreless innings over 20 outings for the Lancaster Barnstormers of the independent Atlantic League. During that span, Yevoli has given up 11 hits and three walks.

Yevoli began the year in minor-league spring training with the Arizona Diamondbacks but was released. He signed with Wichita in the American Association and pitched in 31 games out of the bullpen for the Wingnuts before being traded to Sioux Falls. After three appearances with the Canaries, Yevoli was released and signed by Lancaster. He made a stop at Consol Energy Park to see his former team play while on his way to Lancaster. Yevoli has not given up a run yet with the Barnstormers.

Checking up on three former front office personnel.
Ross Vechio is no longer with the Wild Things and their performance has steadly gone down hill in both on the field and front office.
Kent Tekoleve in no longer the Wild Things GM. He not does the pre and after Pirate games on Root. The current Wild Things GM has much less baseball experience and the Wild Things performance shows.
Jeff Isom is no longer the Wild Things manager. Only one manager since Jeff has had positive results with the Wild Things. How nice it would be to have a manager with some proball background.

One correction to the above comment ... Kent Temulve was never the Wild Things' general manager.

Chris:

Check back on your records.
Kent and Ross were both general managers the first year, at least title wise even though Ross ran the show. I forget the titles but one was gm in charge of part of the operations and the other was gm in charge of the balance.

Okay, I kind of remember. They had two directors (Kent and Ross). Kent as you said was director of baseball operations. I know Ross's title was not GM. What wasw Ross director of? I know after Kent left, what was Ross's title.

Ross was general manager when he was hired. The following is from the first story in the O-R, dated Dec. 23, 2001, in which he was mentioned:

The Washington Wild Things have turned to experience, along with some local knowledge, in their quest to sell the area on minor league baseball.

And they appear to have found a perfect mix.

Ross Vecchio, who has been the general manager of the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Class A Florida State League the past two seasons, has been hired as the general manager of the Wild Things.

And Vecchio will have some local knowledge and additional major league experience to work with, as the Wild Things have also named Jeff Ptak of Cranberry, who has worked in the Pittsburgh Pirates sales department for the past three seasons, as their director of sales and services.

Vecchio, 39, will oversee the operations of the team with a concentration on marketing and promotions. Ptak, 28, will direct the team's season and group ticket sales and coordinate customer service procedures.
