Two former Wild Things throw shutouts

Two former Wild Things pitchers who are now in the American Association recently had impressive outings.

Matt Sergey, who was traded this month from Washington to Laredo for two players to be named, threw a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts Tuesday night against the Grand Prairie AirHogs. Sergey walked only one batter and allowed only two baserunners in Laredo's 9-0 win.

Shawn Blackwell, who played for the Wild Things in 2013 and '14, is pitching for the Sioux Falls Canaries. He was named the American Association Pitcher of the Week after he threw a five-hit shutout against the North Division champion St. Paul Saints last Saturday. Blackwell did not walk a batter and struck out 10.

That Sioux Falls-St. Paul game, by the way, drew a crowd of 7,752.

I wonder if a turf field results in more hits thus runs that a natural grass field?
Otherwise, does a natural grass field result in more shutouts because of a slower infield?

Definitely fewer hits and runs on fieldturf. It's the opposite impact of the old artificial turf.

7,752? If that was associated with Washington, it would take a week to get to that figure without Zavacky-ing the numbers.

Dang it, did have to mention Zavacky? I was having such a nice day until seeing that. The former Asst. General Manager, now titled General Manager, should be given the title of Asst. Employee Intimidator, second only to the Chief Intimidator, Stu Williams.

Washington's payroll practices have been a subject of conversation throughout the league for more than a year.

Oh yea, please tell us more. I haven't heard a thing about how the riverboat gambler that owns the WT pays his staff. I'd love to hear the details including who your sources are. I have wondered just how he can afford such a large staff. Something about that doesn't pass the smell test.

I did hear another rumor though. I heard the riverboat gambler is, or is thinking of, investing in the Wheeling Nailers. Anybody else hear that?

About Friday’s game. For about the fifth time, maybe more than that, Buzzuto sits in the dugout and watches his pitcher
get shelled to the point that the game is virtually lost in the first inning. I know that if you give a pitcher some time early
in a game that he will find his groove. Since the Wild Things are not exactly a group of heavy hitters I fail to see why their
manager only waddles to the mound when, for all intents and purposes, the game is out of hand. Why? In last night’s game
seven runs had scored, with another runner in scoring position, when he finally answered the alarm and brought in a new
pitcher.. We should all know that the definition of insanity is, where you keep doing the same things over and over
and expecting a different result. I think losing last nights game was almost a deliberate act. No matter how angry you may get
just think about it a while. The effort by the Wild Things could not have been more weak.
While we are on the subject of thinking about things, I’m starting to grow weary of Sam Mende’s act. A professional athlete,
is supposed to play through adversity and not mope like a grade school kid after striking out, or some other blunder. The first
couple of times I saw him do this I thought it didn’t mean much but it’s now getting to be a boring habit. Suck it up, Sam. It’s
really too bad because I really liked Sam early in the season. If he is experiencing some off the field problems, perhaps he should
just take the rest of the year off and clear his mind. I’m really disappointed with this sulking stuff. It sure isn't very professional looking.
Anyway, the Wild Things should be sued for false advertising for using the term Professional Baseball. It's about like saying a hamburger flipper at Burger King is a professional chef.

Remember, the Wild Things' bullpen had taken on a heavy workload at Traverse City. They played a DH Wednesday and used all relief pitchers in one game. That's why Boz didn't want to take Zaragoza out in the first inning Friday. He didn't want to have to use the bullpen in every inninng twice in three nights.

Mende's act grew old several months ago.

The WT have had a heavy load all season because nobody in the position to have any say at all, does not know how to evaluate baseball talent. When Ross was with the team he knew how to put together a competitive
team. The present powers that be don’t know nothing from nothing and it shows.
