Sore subject

The Wild Things, mired in last place in the East Division with a 29-39 record, do lead the Frontier League in one category.

OK, make that two. They lead the league in strikeouts with 553 (8.1 per game) but that has been documented on this blog and in print several times.

The other category Washington leads the league in is players put on the disabled list. The Wild Things have put a league-high 13 different players -- from Lee Orr and his cranky back to Matt Sergey and his sore shoulder to C.J. Beatty and his bad hamate bone and strained quad muscle -- on the disabled list. Kyle Helisek has been on the DL twice but counts as only one DLed player. Of the 13 players, seven have been released since landing on the DL.

In each of the last two seasons, Washington put 10 players on the DL. In 2012, they sent six to the disabled list.

Close behind Washington in the DL count, Florence and Lake Erie each have put 11 players on the injured list. Florence pitcher Coleman Stephens is the only player in the league to be sent to the DL three times. Joliet has disabled 10 players.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Greys, the league's traveling team, have not put a player on the DL all year. Windy City, River City and Traverse City have used the DL for only three players each.

I wonder if so many Wild Things on the disabled list has anything to do with taxpayers turf?

Don't know about the turf being responsible for injuries.
I do know it shows how pathetic the WT are when the O-R runs
a feature sports story with a headline stating the team has
moved out of last place____________ by a mere .003 percentage points
while, at the same time being 9 games out of a wild card spot.
Boy, do those people know how to put together a great team, or what?
Don't want to hear about the injuries because ALL teams have to cope with
that problem. Steve and Stu, the crew with NO clue. Please Ross, come back!

And a bunch of those DL moves were "phantom" moves to keep more players on the roster. A common practice use by teams.

On another note, how bout this article out of Evansville that they have been using an ineligible pitcher all season, to the tune of 10 wins. Calling Danny Almonte? What does something like this do to the integrity of the Frontier League if there are not harsh punishments dealt out? I have a very difficult time believing that the league "approved" him and are now going back on it. Sounds like Spin City to me.

When is Commissioner Lee going to render punishment with this?

Mid-August and Stu's teams are both in last place. Yep, Biggest Loser in sports today.

Look on the bright side. With both of Stu's teams in last place, there is only one way they can go.
