At least this one didn't end in a forfeit

Texas Rangers players pummel a fan on the field during the original "10-Cent Beer Night" in Cleveland in 1974. The Lake Erie Crushers tried the same promotion last night with much better results.

With the Cavaliers playing in the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors and garnering the attention of almost all the sports fans in Cleveland, the Lake Erie Crushers had to do something to attract fans to All Pro Freight Stadium for a game Thursday night against the River City Rascals. So somebody who knows a little about Cleveland sports history realized it was the 41st anniversary of the famous "10-Cent Beer Night" promotion the Indians tried in 1974 and decided to revive the cheap beer gimmick. That 1974 game ended with the Texas Rangers being awarded a forfeit because of the unruly fans at old Municipal Stadium.

This time, there was nothing memorable about the Crushers-Rascals game other than the Rascals winning 3-1. Attendance was 1,013.

If you know nothing about the original "10-Cent Beer Night", here's a link worth reading:

Geez, don't give the Wild Things any idea for a stupid promotion.
They have enough stupid promotions, none of which really works. I have
a few ideas to promote this team. First, stop the rotating door stuff with the players. Every time one enters CEP there seems to have been so many roster changes that our eyes begin to glaze over. Second, sell the team to somebody that knows, and even better actually cares, about baseball and it's history and traditions. Don't do dumb things like bringing ancient has been ball players, as Pete Rose, to sell their autograph for forty bucks a stroke. Here we have a player banned from MLB ripping off dumb fans at an Independent League ballpark. A disgraced former ball player doing further damage to the game of baseball with the blessing of a League that seems to have no scruples when it comes to the integrity of baseball to begin with.
I guess it really doesn't matter all that much anyway. I gather from reading this blog, and the lack of participation on it, that nobody cares anyway. Who can blame them. Year after year of nothing but failure, broken promises by the management, and now the already infamous International tie breaker rule (and this isn't a team that can be called International because all the teams are located in the U.S.). Just one ridiculous thing after another with this Frontier League. I would not at all be shocked to see the League resort to T-Ball after the 7th inning so save both time and pitchers arms from being damaged. No serious fan can hold any respect for a league that cares more about pleasing causal fans more that I does about those who really do care about baseball. The two best parts about going to a Wild Things game are; 1. Meeting and having fun with your friends and 2; when the darn game is over you can go home all the while trying to answer the question - Who won the game? An even better question is; Who cares?

The Wild Things should try 10 cent parking night to see if it drives up the attendence.
