Wild Things acquire FL's Pitcher of the Year

The Washington Wild Things made a big move to sure up their starting pitching Tuesday when they acquired right-hander Scott Dunn, the Frontier League’s Pitcher of the Year, in a trade with the Traverse City Beach Bums.

Dunn, a native of Clinton and a South Side Beaver High School graduate, led the Frontier League in wins last year when he compiled a 15-1 record and was sixth in the league with a 2.61 ERA. He became the first pitcher in league history to start a season with 10 consecutive wins.

To get Dunn, Washington gave third baseman Jovan Rosa and a first-round draft pick to the Beach Bums. Rosa was fourth on the Wild Things with a .284 batting average this season. He hit seven home runs, 20 doubles and 34 RBI.

“We now have a solid No. 1 pitcher on our staff who will go out and compete every start,” said Washington manager Bart Zeller. “I’ve admired his pitching for the last three years and said that if there was a way to get him on our staff, then we would make it happen. Scott is a contact pitcher who depends on solid defense to make the plays. This is a trade that is very good for both teams. … Joe Rosa is one of my all-time favorite players. He is the best defensive third baseman in the league and we will miss his presence and leadership.”

Dunn, a four-year pro, was the starting pitcher for the East Division in the 2013 all-star game played at Consol Energy Park. Three weeks ago, Washington acquired lefty pitcher Ryan Zamorsky in a trade with Evansville. Zamorsky also pitched for the East in the all-star game.

A second-round pick at the 2010 Frontier League draft, Dunn played college baseball at Slippery Rock.
