Swan song for Chillicothe

It appears the Chillicothe Paints' 16-year run in the Frontier League will end tonight with a game against the Florence Freedom. Chillicothe is the last of the league's original franchises.

Unfortunately for the fine folks in Chillicothe, the Frontier League simply outgrew the Paints' market and budget. It has been rumored for much of the summer that Chillicothe would be pulling out of the league at season's end. The Paints are last in the FL in attendance at 1,283 per game.

The Paints have been the Wild Things' main and closest rival since Washington joined the league in 2002. The Paints and Wild Things met twice in the playoffs with Chillicothe winning both times.

This clears the way for the Paints to move to Avon, Ohio, for 2009.

Final game for Paints.

Final game for Paints2.

Perhaps the good folks in Chillicothe finally got fed up with the brand of 'professional baseball' that the Frontier League has been offering up. I can very easily see the same thing happing here in Washington. The difference is that it won't take 16 years for it to happen. The attendance here dropped this year and it started early in the season. Next year may be critical to the long term survival of the franchise.
They need to put together a team that is more acceptable to the majority of the folks that attend most of the games. I am speaking here of the older people that buy season tickets.

This year’s team on-field behavior has left a bad taste in the mouths of many of these fans. I know this from talking with many of them. The general consensus seems to be that they will NOT tolerate it again.
Many of them, myself included, are in no mood for a re-play of this year’s Wild Brats. It is NOT the won-lost record that bothers most of us because usually older people have learned that not always winning is just a part of living. It is however how you accept the negative aspects of life that separate the winners from the losers. Looking at it from this point of view the 2008 Wild Things did not look too good. These young men seemed to have felt it was acceptable to shout obscenities as they entered the dugout ( sometimes not waiting even that long). Why should this be considered as normal behavior? Is it because they are athletes? Does this make them exempt from exercising the normal everyday behavior that is expected from the rest of society? I don’t think so, and I’m not alone in my feelings.

I’m absolutely certain that there are those of you that will tell me to just stay away if I don’t like it. I’ve seen enough crap on this blog to know that there are those that have no sense of decency at all when it comes to personal attacks. Staying away is of course one option. Another option is to demand that the Wild Things require their employees do not present this type of images to their customers. I understand the frustration when things go wrong on the field. The former Falconi Field is a very small confined baseball field NOT a huge ballpark – just about all the words shouted can be heard by the fans close by. If any of you men out there do not object to this vulgarity in front of their wives then you have NO respect for them, or yourselves.

Fire away – I’m ready for it!

BTW: I object to Leo Trich using my term ‘the former Falconi Field’ in his letter to the O-R. It’s plagiarism! LOL!

Avon Ohio is about a half hour and 20 miles closer than Chillicothe.
I wonder if Mark Mason will manage the new team when it moves to Avon?
I hope they bring Greg Jelks back for a second chance and Ross has better luck in signing more quality players. I think the team would improve if Jelks were to coach third base rather than Greensburg Bob who is also an athletic director at a high school north of Pittsburgh. Bob drives more miles to home games than Arnold does with the team bus. Maybe Mark Mason will come back for a third run as Washington's pitching coach. The current pitching coach is older than Ron Wilson. Chris Carter seems to be the right fit for a hitting coach.
With the type of team mentioned by Ron Wilson, perhaps having a female trainer may have been too rough on the team. She must have had ear plugs in all of the time. Can you imagine a girl riding a smelly bus with a bunch of guys? Peeyou!!!
Ps-I wonder how much Avon will charge for parking? Chillicothe was free, the same way it should be in Washington.

Ross,
Bring in Mark Mason as the pitching coach and Marty Dunn could do a better job than Bob Bozzoto as the third base coach and what everelse he does.
I think you would have a good combination with Greg Jelks as manager, Mark as pitching coach for the third time in Washington, Chris Carter hitting coach, and Marty Dunn as the position player coach. I would also like to see Jelks back as the third base coach or even Marty Dunn. Fire Bob Bozzoto and the current pitching coach who has less hair than me.

Could you imagine Sahah Palin, the hockey mom and maybe future VP riding the team bus. The current trainer, being female, has a tougher job than the potential new Vice President of our country. At least in Alaska with colder weather it would smell better.

Now I highly resemble that remark.

Yeah but Chillicothe is in a better neighborhood. In Chillicothe they have the criminals locked up. In Avon, way too close to Cleveland, the criminals are running the streets.

Bob Buzzuto is the best guy this team had on its coaching staff. He knows the area, is a stand up guy with the fans, and knows how to treat the players with respect. Everyone loves him, so to make him the scapegoat for a sub-par season would be wrong. He loves being a part of the Wild Things, and they love him.

What? Bobby belongs with this team. He is a great guy and deserves a lot more respect then he gets. And, he actually cares!

I saw a sly grin on Chris Carter’s face after the game last night. He is not THAT good of a loser – perhaps he knows something we don’t. I sure hope we don’t have more of Mr. (Tortoise) Jelks. This guy’s only quick move is to grab a beer at a bar. At least you would not have to wonder if Chris Carter was dead, or alive. Geez, I am tired of watching Jelks mosey around CEP. It sure caught on with the team though – they just moseyed around the field most of the season too!

The team moseyed right out of the playoffs. I don't really think Jelks moseys. I think he rather slithers.

I'll also bet Greg Jelks is back for 2009. I hope he is given more imput on players signed and coaches picked.
