Evansville manager story

If you listened to the Wild Things' game Friday night, you probably heard WJPA Radio's Randy Gore mention that Evansville manager Jason Verdugo collapsed during batting practice and was rushed to the hospital. Verdugo was suffering from dehydration and exhaustion. Below is a link to the Evansville Courier-Press story about Verdugo.

The Otters were managed by pitching coach Brandon Sagara and responded with an 8-0 victory over Washington. It was a costly loss for the Wild Things, who could have moved to within one game of Traverse City in the wild-card standings. Washington remains two back and was passed by Gateway, which is one game behind the Beach Bums. You have to like the Grizzlies' chances of at least pulling even with Traverse City this weekend. Gateway has two more games left against Midwest.

Sagara, by the way, knows a little about crushing losses by the Wild Things. He was Windy City's pitching coach last year. His teams are 6-1 in their last seven games against Washington.

Evansville manager story.

The Wild Things appear to be suffering from exhaustion.

Fading very quickly.

Blown chance after blown chance.

Not to worry. Obama will bring them back to life. He can "We Can", do ANYTHING- except win an election and teach Jelks not to screw something up!

What the hell does that comment have to do with the Wild Things?

Traverse lost again, too.

It ain't over yet.

2 back with 9 to play.
Wild Things hold tie-breakers over everybody they could end up tied with.

It looks like Evansville swept The Wild Things out of the playoffs.

Three teams ahead of Wild Things in wild card. Playoffs - not going to happen. It's all over but the crying.

I'll NEVER shed a tear over a Jelks managed, or mis-managed, team. Who really cares?

Obviously you do or you wouldn't be on this board.

I don't think Jelks is at fault.
Ross assembled the team and apparently this was the worst team he has put together in the 7 years.
A manager may make a difference of several wins or losses per year. Talent or lack of is what really determines how good a team is. As an example look at the Pirates. The Pirates are a major league team with minor league talent. I won't blame their record on their manager John Russell just as you should not blame the Wild Thing performance on Greg Jelks. The Wild Things are a Frontier League team with college level talent this year.

It is amazing to me all the heat both Greg Jelks and Ross V are taking right now. First of all, with 9 games to play the Things are 2 back. Yes there are three teams tied for the second wild card spot but the Things own the tie-breaker against 2 of them. Don't forget the 3 remaining games against midwest. yes maybe the chances aren't good but why not wait another week to slam Ross/Jelks.

Furthermore, do all of you forget the various injuries that caused players to miss games at one point or another (Pat O'Brien, Nate Messner, Robbie Knapp, Zach Groh, Kris Rochelle, etc.etc.). What about Bachman? Maybe the answer at the back end of the bullpen who got signed early in the year.

Maybe, just maybe, you can't blame a single person for the down year... Maybe its a combination of freak things (injuries, guys getting picked up, other teams being a bit better) that have produced an average team. An average team that is a mere 2 games out with 9 games to play.

Bill,

The Wild Things own tie-breakers against EVERYBODY in the race except for Windy City and Evansville.

vs. Traverse City, WT won season series, 7-5
vs. Gateway, WT won season series, 4-2
vs. Rockford, series split, 3-3. WT outscored Rock, 41-37.
vs. River City, series split, 3-3. WT outscored RC, 34-26.
vs. Florence, WT lead series, 6-3, with 3 to play. If Flor. ties series, 6-6, WT won't be in a tie to have to break.
vs. So. Illinois, series split, 3-3. WT outscroed So.Ill., 39-38.

vs. Windy City, Windy won season series, 5-1.
vs. Evansville, Otters won season series, 5-1.

Evansville not likely to get into a tie, down 6 games with 9 to play.
Windy City/So. Illinois not likely to drop into tie for second wild card spot, up 8 with 9 to play.

That leaves Traverse, Gateway, Rockford, Florence, River City. The Wild Things make the playoffs by TYING for the last spot with any, or all of those teams.

Down 2 with 9 to play. Not impossible by any stretch. Not easy in any way either.

Down by 9, Wild Things rally to tie in the seventh, then win it with a solo Haran HR in the eighth.

Two games back of Rockford with 8 to play.

Tonight's win was the best win of the year! What a come back! Anyone who says the Wild Thing players aren't playing hard or to win were just proved wrong!
