More suspensions possible

Washington manager Greg Jelks said he and Wild Things third baseman Brad Arnett face possible suspensions because of Arnett's ejection during the eighth inning Wednesday night.

According to Jelks, a Frontier League manager is suspended for three games following his team's fifth ejection of the season, and the penalty doubles with each ensuing ejection. This is why Jelks was suspended for three games (reduced to two) and Rockford's Bob Koopman for six games following the ejection-filled game at Consol Energy Park earlier this month.

Jelks also said he would not be surprised if the league suspends Arnett, who was ejected by home-plate umpire Matt Neader after Arnett was called out on strikes in the eighth. Arnett apparently said something to Neader as he walked back to the dugout, which sparked the quick heave-ho from the umpire.

Quick is an understatement. That is the fastest I've ever seen an umpire run a guy in this league.

Also, the guy was horrendous behind the plate. However, by your fourth or fifth at bat you would think you would be used to the way he was calling the game.

A couple more ejections, and Gregg Jelks won't be managing for the balance of the year.
Does that mean Bozzo Bob will take over?

I guess if your not able to beat the other team with your skills there remains only one thing to do - blame the umpire!

anonymous said... the silver team could do a better job, considering there would'nt be the awful foul mouth words coming from the players, i felt this ball team would be nice, clean, and enjoyable, but how can it be, the smut, the childish and bullish behavior, the throwing of helmets, bats, gloves, that sure gives the little people a very poor sample of sports behavior, you should go to a little league and see how many kids are doing the same, after all it's what they see from about 85%of other players, for a tem that has had the soulsupport of the washington people and all of those that travel many miles every day to see a game and have always enjoyed them until the players are not reprimanded about behavior and the trash mouths

No suspensions tonight and word is the Wild Things are no longer expecting action from the league office. Commisioner Bill Lee attended Wednesday night's game and probably would have handed down suspensions Thursday morning instead of waiting. … Third baseman Brad Arnett was not in the starting lineup. Matt Neader was umpiring third base. Hmmmm.

Things seem to be returning to normal @ CEP. The nazi usher old dude was on patrol down the first base line being his usual grumpy old self. Why don’t the WT dump this kind of people? I know they are supposed to keep things in order, but do they have to do it THAT way?

On the field same old, same old. Even though the WT won last night, it wasn’t without the usual throwing of stuff all over the field. That Haran guy threw his helmet so hard I’m surprised he didn’t get a hernia. Is that guy a craphead, or what?

Yea, what a terrible person...he threw a helmet big deal. From what I see he's a good guy who just wants to win for this city. Hey, and they're only 2.5 out of the wild card.

I know this is somewhat off-topic, but I'm sick and tired of the profanity of the Wild Things players at the former Falconi Field.
I know not all of them are guilty, but it's the 'rotten apple' snydrome. A few players make them all look bad.
So, at the risk of being banned from the former Falconi Field, I sent the following to Mr. Bill Lee this afternoon.
We can only hope he will look into this problem since the Wild Things personal in charge of such things have failed to responed to our concerns.

Mr. Lee,

Thanks so much for stopping by my seat at the former Falconi Field last Wednesday. I appreciate your ‘connection’ with the average fan such as I. Sometimes I get a little discouraged with what I see happen in the Frontier League, so the direct contact with the people at the top is refreshing.

I know you said that you don’t pay any attention to the blogs. I can understand why you would take that stand, as I know a lot of stuff comes up on them that have nothing at all to do with baseball. However, it is really very easy to separate valid points from just plain bull crap. It could be a valuable tool for the League to use when evaluating what is happening with teams around the circuit.

One of the things that seems to be a major issue with the Wild Things fans this year is the team’s on field deportment. There is a lot of throwing of equipment, in one recent case involving Nathan Messner; it came very close to injuring another teammate. Also, even more important to both the Wild Things and the Frontier Leagues image, is the amount of profanity being shouted by the Wild Things players. Many, many persons have complained about it on the blogs this season. The question that comes up often is; why don’t the Wild Things take some action to stop this. As I’m sure you can understand, most parents do not want their children exposed to that sort of behavior.

From my point of view, I can understand the team’s frustration, but this problem really does need to be addressed. As far as I can see, (I can only speak for myself) I don’t like the ‘f’ word being used so frequently. I find it a bit embarrassing considering the number of ladies in attendance, especially my wife. The Wild Things management just HAS to be aware this is happening (I KNOW they DO read the blogs despite their denials). If they have taken any action it is not apparent and has had no apparent effect on the players. I think it is time for your office to look into this situation and take whatever action you feel is required. This has NEVER before been a large problem at the former Falconi Field where a 'family' enviorment has prevailed. This year’s edition of the Wild Things has been a major disappointment – not because of the won-lost column, but because of their lack of acceptable on field behavior.

Again, thanks for stopping by. It is always a pleasure to speak with you.

Well, anonymous, I don't really expect anything to come of it either but it doesn't do any good to do nothing at all. Already it is costing the Wild Things customers. If you don't mind your wife and kids nearing that stuff then you have no respect for your family.
If you have no wife and children and you enjoy hearing it, then you have no self-respect.

Oh my goodness I was watching an affiliated minor league game a few nights ago and after grounding into a double play to end the game one of the Akron Aeros' players threw his helmet and cursed up a storm. Looks like I should write a letter to league officials seeing as how that is the most awful thing a I can imagine at a PROFESSIONAL baseball game. These are not Pony league kids. These are players that no matter where you go to watch a game you will hear foul language and even more foul behavior. Deal with it or just don't come to the games.

It looks as if Bill Lee doesn't care. Arnett said something ugly to the umpire and got the heave-ho. Lee could have suspended him and used it as an opportunity to clean up their foul mouths but he didn't. He looked the other way and did nothing.

Chris Dugan:
Since the Wild Things management claim not to read your blog, I have a question.
Who assembies the team. Is it manager Greg Jelks or GM Ross Vecchio or a combination of both?
If it is the manager, than spending the off season in Australia may not be wise from the Wild Things viewpoint. If it is Gm Ross, than where the manager spends his off season does not matter.
Who ever put this team together this year missed the boat.

Some of you guys have no 'moral compass' at all. Oh, I known what causes that - poor upbringing. A persons behavior is a reflection on their parents. Chris Sidick's parents must be really fine people - NOT!

For the people on this blog with some common sense, and decency, I received a positive reply from Bill Lee. Of course I don’t expect that anything to change but it doesn’t hurt to let him know. (The person that could stop it is probably Greg Jelks – lots of luck on that one!). A lot of the Wild Things paying customers to Mr. Lee’s business are not happy with this team’s behavior.

And, even though some of you seem to feel differently, it IS a business. How long would any other business keep it’s doors open if it allowed such manure that goes on at the former Falconi Field? How many business would you take your children into if its employees were throwing things around and using the language you are beginning to hear routinely now at a Wild Things game? Why should we feel this is okay just because they are athletes? This type of deportment is not accepted as ‘normal’ in our society. Why should these individuals be excepted from what most people accept as normal?

Yesterday anonymous said “Deal with it or just don't come to the games.” Who are you to dictate to me, or any one else, whether we should, or should not go anywhere we darn well please. I have had full season tickets for the last 5 years. This behavior has not been prevalent during these previous seasons – I had no reason to think it would start this season. You can bet that if it continues, I will stop attending Wild Things games. BTW: Why are you so ashamed to give us your name? Afraid your mommy and daddy will find out you enjoy cussing and swearing? To say you have a paper head would be to compliment you too much! Keep on hiding behind your computer, little guy. I don’t attend Akron Areos games and care less what they say, or do. You are just flat lying about hearing all the things you say you did because those Internet minor league games are on a 5 to 7 second tape delay for that very reason. Stop trying to justify YOUR immature attitude. Try being a man for a minute or two! Yeah, it’s a personal attack – Deal with it!

Lets see:
At Falconi Field (CEP) they have filthy language, a bar, happy hour (every Thursday night), smoking behind the stands.
This does not sound like family entertainment.
This sounds like the old Liberty Avenue in Pittsburgh.
And yes they charge for parking just like down town Pittsburgh.
Mr Wilson is right, the Wild Thing venue this year is a menance.

Most FL rosters are put together by the manager, coaches and a director of baseball operations, if the latter is not the manager. With the Wild Things, Ross Vecchio is considered the director of baseball operations. You try to use as many contacts as you can when assembling a team, so there is not just one person with input on who is signed and isn't. Major league scouts are very helpful in finding guys, too.
The version of the 2008 Wild Things that began spring training was largely returning players and those signed by Ross. Greg Jelks wasn't officially with the organization until January (I think that's when he was hired). By that time, most of the decisions on returning players were made and several players released by affiliated teams last fall were signed.
Some of the new players this spring were Jelks guys, at least one was a Bob Bozzuto guy, Chris Carter recommended some players and many were tracked down and signed by Ross.

Mazz, As you may, or may not know, I played baseball for about 20 Years. That was probably about 30 years before you were born. Anyhow, I honest to God do NOT think I am over reacting. I know full well what goes on in the dugout and the clubhouse. Emotions do play a part in the way a player responds to adversity. This years edition of the Wild Things is WAAAAY beyond anything that has happened in previous seasons – absolutely no comparison to anything in the past here. If the players want to ‘vent’ they should at least wait until they fully enter the dugout rather than shouting the ‘f’ word within earshot of so many small kids and ladies. I do not have virgin ears and I admit I’ve used the same language also during my playing days (and just maybe one or two times after that – LOL). I know for sure it was never heard by any others but my teammates. There is a time and place for everything but shouting the ‘f’ word in public is NOT acceptable behavior. BTW, it happened again tonight. Whether he likes it or not, I think Mr. Jelks bears a major part of the responsibility for the classless act that the Wild Things are this year. There are a lot of folks at the former Falconi Field that are disgusted with the behavior of this team.

Actually Mazz, I just go to the games for the shear joy of watching baseball. I matters little to me which team wins.
If I had the means, I would just tour around the League all season and enjoy games at different venues. Oooops, there I go dreaming again!

Mazz, please keep posting on this blog. Your input just might just put some civility into it.

There is NO doubt in my mind about either statement. Mr. Lee cares about nothing that happens on the field and is only concerned about promoting his Fantasy League – did I say Fantasy? YUP, I DID!
When all these cussing, swearing crap mouthed Wild Things players come storming off the field with their mouths running they should remember this; it is their lack of skills that cause all this stuff.
Time to grow up kids and get a real job. Then, start the same sort of behavior with a real boss. You will find yourselves at the head of an unemployment line.
Just out of curiosity I’d like to know if you speak that way in from of your mothers! I’ll bet not. Then why do you feel it’s ok to do so in front of my mother. Your all a bunch of foul mouthed jerks.
I’ve been to my last Wild Things game and I will spread the word around about how these ‘young men’

I don’t recall saying “over and over again the baseball is a business” Can you please refer me to another time I said it? If I did please forgive me for being redundant!.

I am fully aware of the name change of the ball park. However, I prefer to call it “the former Falconi Field”
Is that incorrect? Was it not at one time named Falconi Field? You call it what you wish to call it, and I’ll do the same. Agreed? I will NEVER refer to it as CEP as long as Mr. Jelks occupies the dugout! It’s like this – Jecks and the word ‘energy’ are not compatible! I would not at all be surprised to learn that Consol is embarrassed by all the stuff that has happened at the former Falconi Field this year. The probably are just as glad that I don’t use their name, I don’t know that for sure – don’t care. This years team behavior is like ‘a lump of foam rubber coal’. Just a thought!

Ron, Here is another way of looking at it.
To get coal you have to get down and dirty. The WT this year are representing Consol Energy well - they are REALLY down and dirty. Down in the standings and dirty in the mouth!
