Around the league

A few quick notes from around the league (I'll be back later today with some thoughts on the hit batsmanfest last night):

* Windy City's Isaac Hess threw the season's first no-hitter last night in a 13-0 ThunderBolts win over Midwest. Here is something interesting from the Daily Southtown's story about the game:

Hess appeared to lose his no-hit bid in the seventh when Miguel Magrass led off with a bouncer that went off the glove of third baseman Josh Horn and into left field. The play was originally called a single, but was later changed to an error, keeping the no-hitter intact.

* There was almost two no-hitters on the same night. Gateway's Devin Collis threw a one-hitter at Traverse City. Collis gave up a hit early in the game to the Beach Bums' Brad Roblin and then retired 20 straight.

* I had stated earlier in this blog that the league's transactions deadline was Aug. 12. That's wrong (that's what I get for lifting the information from a story in another newspaper). The deadline is midnight the night of Aug. 18. This is an off day for the Wild Things.

* Traverse City has put pitcher David Nathanson on injured reserve because of a back problem. Nathanson (9-2, 2.05) leads the league in ERA.

* Entering tonight's game against the Wild Things, Rockford has the top four hitters in the league - second baseman Joe Anthonsen (.347), outfielder Jason James (.338), infielder Robbie Knapp (.333) and third baseman Brad Dutton (.331). The Riverhawks, however, are fourth in the league in batting at .278.

* Washington's Jacob Dempsey is tied for the league lead in RBI with 60.

* Here is a link to a story about former Wild Things pitcher Tom Cochran, who is 11-0 with a 1.90 ERA for Worcester of the independent Can-Am League:

Who could we trade for Tom Cochran?
Maybe Robbie Knapp.
Oh, I forgot he was already traded!
Lets see:
Josh Eauches batting .167
Josh Geric batting .133
Drew Hoisington batting .162
Phil Butch batting .239
Kris Rochelle batting .211
All are batting about Tom Cochran's ERA.
This would make a good package deal and we could move one of the starters into the bull pen.
As a bonus, we could throw in:
Matt Restivo era 6.23
Sam Mann era 6.37
James Wladyka era 5.00
How many teams have you seen the leader in saves is all others (those cut).
With this kind of talent, I think Greg Jelks is doing a great job.
If he had last years talent, Washington would have the best record in the league and probably have more respectability from the plays at year end. (remember the year end melt down with the press-I think it has cost attendence this year)!

If the Wild Things were to acquire Tom Cochran in a trade, they would be required, because of FL roster rules, to release or trade either Aaron Ledbetter, Chris Sidick or Brett Granstrand.

I doubt Brian Nelson will leave his job with the Florida Marlins to go to Washington.

Andy Haines is with the Florida Marlins. Brian Nelson was his replacemetn and managed the Thunderbolts at the start of this season.

Just let Bozzuto or Chris Carter take over. At least THEY still have the players, fans and WT employees respect!

Chris Carter seems to be a nice guy but his coaching skills at first base are somewhat suspect.

What do you mean by 'coaching skills' at first base? How much coaching is done over there anyways besides telling the runner how many outs there are?

Well if you want Roy Jacobs to come back you will have to go to your local prison and bail him out. He is charged with murder you know. He was funny but I can't see where he was any better than Carter. Chris is only there because he used to play with the Wild Things. While we're at it, let's get rid of Jelks and find a manager that know what he is doing. I've been a season ticket holder forever and this is the worst year ever that the WT have played.

When I said bring back Roy Jacobs to coach first base, I was really joking. Yes Chris has more talent and probably more confidence from the team. I was only referring to Roy as a put down to the person who was putting Chris Carter down.
However, Roy and Bob Boz look similiar. It would really be funny to see Roy coaching first and Bob coaching third. It would be the best add for Jenny Craig ever.

"How many teams have you seen the leader in saves is all others (those cut)."

Those same "other" players are also 4-10 with a 7.0+ ERA.

The only active players with a higher ERA is B Baldwin who had a "Horvathian" outing of 1.2 innings, allowing 7 earned runs in saving all the other arms in the pen.
