Mason hired by UPG

According to the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg's athletic website, Mark Mason has been hired as an assistant coach for UPG's baseball program. I don't know how this impacts Mason's future with the Wild Things (he was working on a one-year contract). The head coach at UPG is Adam Jack, a former Waynesburg University player.

Here is a portion of the press release:

GREENSBURG, PA- Head Baseball Coach Adam Jack is pleased to announce the hiring of new assistant coach Mark Mason. Mason brings to the Bobcat Baseball Program more than 20 years of professional and collegiate coaching experience and is currently the manager of the Washington Wild Things in Washington, PA.
"We are very pleased to add Mark Mason on our coaching staff this season. He brings a tremendous amount of experience that will valuable in developing this very young team." said Jack

There is no better argument for Universal Health Care than this genius. I certainly hope the bill passes so you can get the Prozac prescription that you are in dire need of. Your delusions are downright hysterical. Thanks for the laugh! I can only hope somebody accuses me of being Chris Sidick or Ernie Banks next...ha ha.

On topic, anybody think Brett Grandstrand will be part of the Wild Things coaching staff next season? And where is this rumor about Kalamazoo coming from? Could you post a link?

Riordan will never be the Wild Things' manager. Massarelli doesn't like Riordan, and Ross Vecchio never makes a move without consulting Massarelli.

I believe your fact about Ross contacting Maz before a move.
Why else would he unload Ernie Banks to River City?
Since River City had never been in the playoffs, it almost backfired on Maz when River City faced the West of Cleveland team in the finals.
I don't think Ross's back would tolerate the long bus rides, so perhaps Grandstand or Cahill will be named manager.
I wonder if Maz advised Ross to take the job at CUP?

I don't think Granstrand will be a coach next year, now I am no means counting him out as a future coach for the Wild Things because i think he is a great leader and he basically was a coach on the field for the last 2 years. But i think he will be too close to some (the possible 4 guys they actually bring back) players to have the authority a coach should have. Just my personal opinion. But i do think he would be a much better choice than bring Mason back.

Just to put this line up out there for some discussion.

John Cahill-Head Coach
Bob Buzzuto- Asst. Coach
Brett Grandstrand-Asst. Coach

what do you think?

please someone suggest a pitching coach!!!!!!!!!

No one in their right mind with any credentials would want to manage this train wreck. You couldn't talk a PONY league manager into working for the ownership group that is currently in place.
Is Ross at CUP yet ? I hope he gets away from the B.S. he puts up with from Franni and her posse. He's really not a bad guy.

Amazing the fodder. I've been a fan from day one in 2002. No manager could have done better with the crap that was dealt to Mason this season. Between no pitching coach, possibly the worst performance by vets in the history of the team and injuries, we as fans are fortunate to have finished where we did in the division. We also beat Kalamazoo 2 of 3 when they were playing for everything and we were playing for nothing. This team scored and battled all year. We had the best record in the league for the month of July and it should have been even better than it was. You can't lose all the players to injuries and retirement like we did and survive the season. Even players finishing on the field had major injuries and were playing anyway. We have been spoiled making the playoffs the 1st 6 seasons. By the way Mason was there for 4 of those. Margin for error is to slim. What you bring to spring training has to perform and stay healthy at a high percentage. That did not happen this season. That cannot be blamed on the manager or coaching staff. Ask Traverse City been in the league since 06 and still haven't made the playoffs.

Wah! Wah! Wah!

Every team had injuries and nobody who retired was contributing anything. The fact is, the pitchers Mason brought in stunk, defense seemed to be considered optional, the pitchers stunk, two of the vets contributed nothing for most of the year and the pitchers stunk.

Let's talk injuries and retirements. In no particular order, jason Apel (of), jon lewis (closer), rick austin (pitcher), Craig snipp (pitcher), chris raniere (infielder), phil laurent (outfielder), Kris rochelle (catcher), grant psomas (infielder), Matt Sutton (outfielder), Jacob Dempsey (outfielder), Chris sidick (outfielder) plus the Anderson kid gets picked up after a short stay and Grand strand was hurt as well.

Phil Laurent retired do to his injury he was only in the top of the league in hitting but that's not impact. In 08 Ledbetter had a bad year and we didn't make playoffs. When vets struggle its pretty much over.

The owners should have bought the Midwest series like other teams did this season.

The team was on a roll going to Midwest when their bus broke down leaving Florence. That would have been the start of a 9 game homestand after having the best July in the league. That series was the beginning of a bad August.

September 28, 2009 at 4:41 PM

OK, let's talk injuries and retirements:

jason Apel (of) - never played a game so you can't use him as an excuse. next you'll be saying that because Barry Bonds didn't sign with the WTs a few years ago it hurt Mason's ability to manage.

jon lewis (closer) - Who's idea was it to sign this guy? Couldn't throw the ball in the same area code as home plate. Team was better without him. Thank goodness he retired.

rick austin (pitcher) - Never showed he could get the job done. Team was better without him.

Craig snipp (pitcher) - bad signing. mediocre at best.

chris raniere (infielder) - backup infielder at best. Not great loss.

Phil laurent (outfielder) - That one hurt.

Kris rochelle (catcher) - Can't hit a lick. No difference between him and Robbins.

grant psomas (infielder) - That one game he missed sure made a big difference, huh?

Matt Sutton (outfielder) - Should have missed more games than he did. No plate discipline. Rally killer.

Jacob Dempsey (outfielder) - Seems to have played in every game.

Chris sidick (outfielder) - he should have retired.

The Anderson kid - Played in two games. Can't say losing him hurt because he was never here. Other teams were hurt much more than the WTs by losing guys to affiliated ball. Can't use Anderson as an excuse.

Grand strand was hurt as well - Sure played like he was hurt. maybe the only thing that was hurt was his pride. Couldn't get the job done, just like the other 40 or so players Mason brought in.

It was just another fifth place finish for a Mason-managed team. No excuses. When you have bad coaching and bad players, you're destined for a bad season.

The only person from this team that should return is Dempsey. Fire all the coaches, release all the players and start over. There's nobody other than Dempsey here who can't be replaced with somebody better. Time to start cleaning house.

Anon,

So you're saying Sidick should have retired after the 08 season when he hit over .300. Interesting, Lewis was an all star in 08 as a closer and had success in the Northern League as well.

At the end of the year Sidick played with a broken hand for 3 weeks, Sutton has torn rotator that needs surgery and Dempsey has a torn labrum that also needs surgery. These injuries were there all of August.

Psomas played a lot of the season with pulled oblique muscles. And not that it matters but it was a 4th place finish. Rochelle was the best defensive catcher in the league. He was head and shoulders over Robbins. He also had great stats hitting with runners in scoring position.

Dempsey is a good hitter but he can't play defense and strikesout a lot.

Baseball is a game where you go on stats.
Unfortunately, stats are a record of the past and not an indicator of the future.

Ask the Yankees, no playoffs last year best record in baseball this year.

That's the beauty of the game. A player has a career year and then gets released the next for poor performance.

Banks all-star

Laurent should have been an all-star
Parker .300 hitter all season and one of the best OBP in the league
Lucas very good year, low 3 era

You're right they all stunk. What a moron.

You must have been released during the season.

"2007 Chillicothe Paints finish in 2nd place. Mason managed team."

Let's not get too carried away there paintsfan. Yes, Chillicothe finished in second place that year - in a 4-team division. With a losing record. 8.5 games out of first place. With one of the teams in the division being Slippery Rock. A dead man could have managed a team to a 3rd place finish in that division. If Mason's Chillicothe team played in the Central Division that year it would have finished 21 games out of first place. If it played in the West, it would have finished 18.5 games out of first. Nothing to brag about.

So Sidick had a broken hand the last 3 weeks. What was his excuse the rest of the year when he was pitiful? Did Sutton's shoulder make him swing at pitches over his head? Rochelle couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag. And calling Nick Peterson an all-star, thanks for the biggest laugh I've had all year. There were at least 30 relief pitchers in the league better than him. Hardly an all-star.

Time to start cleaning house ..... don't stop until everyone but Dempsey is gone.

PITCHING was the problem.
also Banks and Laurent missed over 30 games each.

Laurent injury. Banks traded plus the time served for his suspension made him miss more like 40 or so games.

At the time, offensively they were 2 of the top 4 in the league.

Losing that type of talent is hard to replace.

unfortunately for the know it alls on this blog perception is not always reality.

Example:

Batting average with runners in scoring position:
Sutton .320 (103abs)
Dempsey .287 (115abs)

Batting average with runners in scoring position and 2 outs:
Sutton .333 (45abs)
Dempsey .269 (52abs)

Batting average with bases loaded:
Sutton .333 (9abs)
Dempsey .273 (11abs)

Just throwing it out there.

Chris, your statement about Washngton leading the league in losses with the lead after the 8th inning with 4 was incorrect,
Midwest had 5 and surprisingly Lake Erie had 3.

Washington also led the league in wins when tied after 5 innings with 11.

In one run games to compare to Lake Erie and River City who played in the championship:

Lake Erie 14-15
River City 11-11
Washington 10-12

to correct stat fan on previous entry:

Here's all the stats you need to know about Dempsey and Sutton:

Dempsey 81 runs
Sutton 45 runs

Dempsey 31 home runs
Sutton 15 home runs

Dempsey 55 walks
Sutton 19 walks

I'll take Dempsey any time.

And the only important statistic for the team: 43 wins, 53 losses. Stinky, stinky, stinky.

Mason will be the manager (unfortunately) Ross will be the GM and your guess is as good as mine who will be the managing partner.

Dempsey hits for more power and takes more walks. Sutton needs more plate discipline but for a rookie he only hit about 17points less than Dempsey while taking way fewer walks.

Sutton may be the best defensive rightfielder in the league. He saved a lot of runs defensively.

Dempsey could not have done that. Dempsey also was a 2year player.

i think stat fan was trying to defend Sutton when one of the bloggers called him a "rally killer" a few posts back.

the numbers, if right, show Sutton was a better situational hitter than Dempsey or that Sutton was not as bad as it seemed.

October 1, 2009 at 9:20 AM

The bottom line is, when you have an outfielder who hit .264 and drew only 19 walks, he is easily replaced. You can find plenty of better outfielders next spring, especially ones that won't get suspended for more than half the season, like Sutton did last year. You can't find guys like Dempsey who hit 31 home runs and led the league in RBIs two years in a row. Sutton has to go and Dempsey has to stay. You can't make a case for keeping Sutton.

I have been complaining about the taxpayer turf from the day it was announced in May. If I remember, John Switek was around for he announcement and then was booted out. Yes I was there opening day when Rep. Soloby and Bob Gregg stood in front of home plate and declaired how they wasted taxpayer money.
Maybe this will tell you where I have been.
