Series leftovers

Some leftovers from the series against Gateway:

* This edition of the Wild Things has more power-hitting than any of the previous seven clubs. Washington has hit 17 home runs in 12 games, including three last night. And typically, the ball doesn't carry well at Consol Energy Park until it gets warmer and more humid than what we've we've had this spring.

In 2002, the Wild Things hit 56 homers all year.

* Thursday night was one of the few times the wind was ever blowing out to right field at CEP. It usually only blows out to left field, or in from left field. The wind, however, had nothing to do with any of the home runs that were hit to right field. Some of those shots would have gone out of any park, including Yellowstone.

* Forget the home runs, the big story of the series was the attendance, or lack thereof. The paid attendance of 1,340 for Wednesday night's game was the smallest in Wild Things history. The previous low was 1,712 for the franchise's fourth home game, June 4, 2002. While the 1,340 was tickets sold, my estimate is there was no more than 500, maybe even 400, in the ballpark. However, I don't think it was the smallest turnstile-count crowd the franchise has had. I remember, in 2002, there was a day-night doubleheader against Chillicothe on July 4. The day game, which was played when it was something like 95 degrees, probably didn't draw more than 300 to the park, though the paid attendance was more than 2,000.

The crowd of 1,815 for Tuesday night's game was the Wild Things' third-smallest. The Penguins' Stanley Cup Finals game against Detroit and the lousy weather that night had something to do with the poor attendance, but a game last year opposite the Penguins in the finals drew 2,144. And Thursday night's game drew 2,511 opposite the Penguins.

* Gateway's 13-5 win Tuesday over the Wild Things was called in the middle of the eighth inning because of rain. I still don't know why the game was not resumed.

A hard rain began falling during the inning break but the ground crew/interns tarped the field quickly and prevented the infield from turning to mud. The rain stopped after 20 minutes, but the game was called off five minutes later.

The explanation I was given was another storm was headed for Washington and it wouldn't be wise to resume play. When I called it a night and headed to bed at 2 a.m., I was still waiting for that second storm to arrive.

They have played more than 100 games at CEP under worse field conditions than they had when the rain stopped Tuesday night, which begs the question: Why wasn't the game resumed? It wasn't raining. The field was certainly playable. You can't call a game because it "might" rain.

The only reason I can come up with for not resuming play had to be either the Wild Things or the umpires felt they had no chance to come back and win. Once a game begins, the decision to stop or restart a game is up to the umpires, so the Wild Things can't say the game is over. But if the umpires did indeed say the field wasn't playable Tuesday, then why didn't an umpire check the field conditions? This wasn't done.

* Former Wild Things pitcher Tom Cochran earned a save in his debut with the Class AA Carolina Mudcats. Cochran pitched three innings Monday against Tennessee, allowing one hit (solo homer) and striking out five in the Mudcats' 9-2 win.

* Former Wild things infielder Chris Carrara has signed with Gary (Ind.) of the independent Northern League. Ex-Things shortstop Jeff Beachum also plays for Gary.

Chris,
I thought the game was in the control of the umpires once the game was underway.
Now that the Wild Things have managed to leagally pilfer the till for a new turf I guess it does matter too much about the playing conditions.
Before the ill gotten money was approiated they would continue to play with 4 inches of water on the field!
Can you give a definative answer about whether the League has a mandate requiring all teams to have turf? If so, is there is date attached to it?
I notice the League has reverted to only 2 umpires again.
Hardly the best set up!

Washington, PA is just a mini-Chicago when it comes to politics. Just about as crooked as it could possibly be. When these blood sucking turkeys that masquerade as a baseball organization hook up with these politicians, MIRACLES HAPPEN!
Nobody yet has answered the question; Why do the taxpayers owe the Wild Things anything? It should be the other way around. Don’t try to feed us the sickening bull crap about all the businesses they have brought to the immediate area of CEP. Those same businesses also increase the cost of public services to the area.
Tourism? When was the last time a tour bus came through Washington? The last time I saw one it was broke down, it sure as hell wasn’t touring beautiful downtown Washington to see Shortys Lunch!
The Wild Things management has only one thing in mind. How much money can they suck from this area.
When the well runs dry, or the people finally say “no more”, the WT will pull up stakes and leave town in a heartbeat. That’s the history of the Frontier League – an objective review of their past should prove that to you. All you need to do is look at the number of ‘fallen flags’ in the Frontier Leagues brief history. History has proven, time after time, that “The past IS prologue! It should not be too difficult to reach a logical conclusion.
Crooks are crooks. No matter how they manage to keep it legal. (Remember, the same politicians that make this sh** legal, are also the ones that write the laws). We’ve been ripped off, plain and simple. We HAVE to admit that, but we don’t have to go down like a meek little lamb.

The umpires are indeed in control of stopping and resuming a game once the first pitch is thrown. But, if the umpires didn't check the condition of the playing field Tuesday night after the rain stopped, my guess is somebody told them a second storm was coming. I'm still waiting for the storm.

How many years is the Wild Things contract to play in Washington?
As mentioned about the movement from city to city in the Frontier League, there needs to be some obligation of commitment to have a professional baseball team play at Consol Park for at least 10 years into the future before taxpay turf is installed.
Bob Gregg, perhaps you can comment on the legal obligation of commitment of a professional baseball team in Washington.
I have not heard, but do you think they are thinking about bringing socker back to the field after taxpayer turf is installed.
That would be a double disaster:
1. taxpayer turf
2. soccer

Jacob Dempsey with a “B” and Ernie Banks as the class valedictorian. Ernie shocked everybody in the house with the VERY loud F bomb Tuesday. Shame on you Ernie, we expected more from you! The REAL Ernie Banks NEVER did that sort of thing!

About players swearing......
It's all about class. Think back to players past....ever see Loggins, Arbinger, Ellis, Cahill, Carter, Peavey, Carrara swear???

I never did.

Classy guys.

No need for a player to swear to show that he cares about the game. Those mentioned sure did care.

That has already been answered. It's Mike Mason.

First, its Mark Mason. Second, how has it worked thus far? Press the panic button. Something has to be done. The pitching staff is much worse this year compared to last year.

OF COURSE it's worse than last year. you lost the all-time wins, innings, strikeouts, everything else leader in League history, plus a guy that was better than average and chewed up nearly six innings a start for two years. you don't really think those would be easy to replace do you?

Damn PA so freakin loud that you can’t hear you teeth chattering from the cold. Sure as hell can’t talk to anyone even close by you. Seven games into the season and they can’t even get the PA right.
Somebody won the USED car last night. It was a 13 year old clunker Mercury. I sure hope the pedals work.
WT made it two in a row.
The absolute highlight of the night was the fact that Bill DiFabio was not there! What a relief from his obnoxious, ego filled line of crap. Do you suppose the Wild Things FINALLY figured out the fans don’t like him?
Probably not, they can’t seem to figure out the other things the fans don’t like!
I just might come back to another game in September. I’d like to watch one more game played on grass.
I won’t be there in 2010 to see the plastic grass that I unwillingly helped buy for them. They just stole the money from our wallets when we were not watching. Can’t be too careful with these carnival types!

If you wish to reach more people about an issue such as the Wild Things rip off of the public,
it is necessary to post to blogs other than the “Wild About Things” blog.
Some folks don’t give a rat’s behind about the Wild Things but they do care about being ripped off by them. Calling attention of this massive ‘legal’ fraud my discourage it’s practice in future.

Just posting on the “Wild About Things” blog reaches only those that have probably already made a decision on the way the Wild Things arranged to secure the funds of the ‘turf’.

You notice this individual did NOT place his name at the end of his remarks. Sure would be hell to get into a “life or death” situation and have to depend of his type. Some people were born with no guts and stay that way their entire lives.

If Wild Things baseball is “baseball the way it should be played’ I guess the all those MLB teams, like the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Brewers are all mixed up. They need to send some scouts to Washington, PA to see how you really put a cohesive team on the field. You know, a team as has mastered all the fundamentals of the game and prove it night after night. Man, are these MLB people ever dumb!
Most of those Major League teams are even stupid enough to play on-------GRASS! Almost all of them don’t have ‘has been’ cowboys and sixty year old rock stars performing on their playing surface either.

I love watching the Wild Things play and I know that not all baseball players are unique. The Wild Things are enjoyable whether they win or lose, although I prefer to see them win. My favorite player used to be Mike Arbinger and now Chris Sidick. Chris has a foul mouth but who doesn't nowadays? Sit in a bar, go downtown, to the mall, whereever, you will hear people swear. Why pick on the Wild Things? I don't like to hear it but I just turn it off and consider the source. I will be back tonight to watch another game and yes, to hear more swearing. Sir, You are absolutely correct. The problem with your statement, at least the way I see it, is that you are talking about the right of having a secret ballot during an election. First, this is not an election. It is the free exchange of thought and ideas on a blog. If you wish not to identify yourself that is your choice.
I feel that when a person is going to resort to name calling NOT to give your name is a sign that one lacks moral courage. Also, I feel it is the same if your are going to criticize any person, or any organization. These parties should not be attacked by someone that prefers to remain in the ‘shadows’ such as you seem to want to do. The Wild Things are not particularly happy about what I say but, they appreciate the fact I don’t take pot shots at them while hiding behind my computer.
I respect your right not to leave you name. If that is want you want to do I don’t care. However, if you would choose to leave your name it would add to your credibility in my opinion. In no way do I think my comments have more validity than yours. If I offended your sensitivities, I apologize.

BTW: No need to thank me for military service. I served eight years active duty. I was not drafted, I choose to serve. Like others before me, we need no thanks! “Your enemy is your enemy until he is dead”

Obuma,
First, you are cruising to the put on the same “hit list “I’m on if you real name ever becomes known.
They will be on you like flies on you know what! Don’t use your name like silly me. It’s not exactly fun being called some of the stuff the Wild Things office employees have called me. When, and if, I can ever 100% prove that the two individuals that did this stuff are guilty I will take whatever action necessary – all of it legal! There won’t be any low life “cyber assassinations” involved either!

If you want to know the process involved in THEM getting OUR money for THEIR use, it is in the O-R, just do a search.

If you want to know their justification for applying for the grant money, ask them. It is the most convoluted, self serving bucket of garbage you will EVER hear. It’s something along the lines of; Hey, there is money to be had so why not take it? Granted (that’s probably a poor choice of a word in this case), there is more to it than that. Let’s put it this way: The Government is handing out surplus cheese. Now this cheese is really intended for the needy but, in the way government works, they forget to say that. As is always the case, some not so needy party grabs all they can get anyway. Is it legal? Sure. Is it moral? You be the judge.

This State grant, as I understand it, required matching funds from the tourism folks. Obuma, please don’t laugh here
‘cuase it really isn’t funny. At least two of the persons that were eligible to vote on this matter have DIRECT ties to the Washington Wild Things. Can you even begin to believe the impropriety of that? It’s laughable, also sad. These people think all the local yokels just fell off the turnip truck!.

I give Christine Blaine high marks for integrity in this matter as she abstained, as she should have. She is a really
great lady.

Bob Gregg of radio station WJPA, could not seem to reach the same moral standard as Ms. Blaine. The conflict of interest in his vote should be called into question by anyone that has ever studied Civics 101 Franni Williams is an attorney, I hope to God that she could see that.

Of course Obuma sadly we live in the REAL world, especially here in southwestern Pennsylvania. We have come to believe from our experiences with the almost daily use of political influence, “connections”, and outright corruption
that we can expect nothing better from our so-called leaders.

Looks like we're going to see a lot of high scoring games at CEF this season. What is the team record for most home runs in a season, anybody know? We've got plenty of lumber with Psomas, Banks, Dempsey and Sutton leading the charge. I can't help but wonder if the Wild Things may have to deal one of them for some pitching help at some point this season.
Good job by the bullpen the past few nights, with Eachues being the hero Saturday, and Austin, Evans and Peterson doing a nice job last night. Only 3 walks and no hit batsmen last night, see what happens when the pitchers don't give free baserunners? Keep it up! Hopefully some consistent starting pitching will emerge soon.
Chris, have you ever heard any WT or opposing player complain about the lights at CEP? I've been to 3 games so far this season, and have seen 3 outfielders lose a fly ball in the lights, such as Houin last night for River City. Just wondering, because I can't recall ever seeing that happen in my many trips there during the past few seasons. Also, is Mason planning on doing double-duty as manager/pitching coach all season, or does he eventually want to bring somebody in? Wayman's agonizing slow walk to the mound made Jelks look like the roadrunner by comparison.
The young lady who sang the anthem last night was phenomenal. If anybody knows her, please pass along the compliment.

It has the faint odor of something to do with toupee turf.
I have a question for anybody that cares to help me with this. Have any of you ever heard of a company located in Canonsburg named Mylan Laboratories? I have seen their banners at CEP.
Other than those advertisements, is there any connection, direct, or indirect, between Mylan Laboratories and the Washington Wild Things?
Is there any possibility of some involvement between these two businesses in the very near future?
Will it involve toupee turf?
Just wondering,
