With his team tied for first place in the Frontier League’s East Division, Bart Zeller resigned Sunday morning as manager of the Wild Things.
According to Wild Things owner Stu Williams, the 72-year-old Zeller cited “health reasons and concerns” for his resignation.
Zeller did not respond to a request for comment.
Zeller guided Washington to a 31-19 record entering Sunday evening’s home game against the Florence Freedom. It was Washington’s final game before the all-star break.
“I do not know what his health reasons and concerns are,” Williams said, “but I do know that to leave a team as good as this one, and at this point in the season, that must say something.”
An interim manager has not been named. Hitting coach Bob Didier, pitching coach Kevin Gryboski and bench coach Bob Bozzuto prepared the team Sunday.
“I’ve talked to the coaching staff, and I’m going to take the rest of the week to think about it,” Williams said.
“We have three extremely talented individuals. Bob Bozzuto has meant so much to this team for so many years and is a knowledgeable baseball guy. Bob Didier has probably 50 years of experience, almost all of it is on the major league-level, and Kevin Gryboski is a major-league-talented pitcher who is taking good care of the pitchers. With that in mind, I can’t make a wrong decision. I expect we will have a solution after the all-star break.”
Zeller was to manage the East Division team in the Frontier League All-Star game Wednesday night in Sauget, Ill. He will be replaced by Evansville’s Andy McCauley. Gryboski and Bozzuto were to be coaches at the game but Williams said no members of the Wild Things’ coaching staff will be going to Sauget.
Among the in-game duties for Zeller was coaching third base. That job was done Sunday night by Didier, who coached third base in the major leagues when he was on the coaching staff of the Oakland Athletics.
The resignation came one day after the Wild Things defeated Florence, 5-4, in a game that included two pitches thrown behind batters and warnings issued to both teams by home plate umpire Matt Neader. Moments after Washington starter Tyler Elrod threw a pitch behind Florence’s Joe Staley in the fourth inning, there was an altercation in the Wild Things’ dugout between Zeller and Gryboski.
Following the game, there was a players-only meeting on the field that Williams described as “a group of adults getting together and deciding to act like adults.”
The coaching staff later met with Williams. Gryboski was not in the dugout Sunday night. He watched the game from the owner’s suite. A Wild Things spokesman said Gryboski was not suspended.
“Last night, we had a problem in the dugout and a little problem on the field. We got to the bottom of that situation (in the dugout),” Williams said. “It was all game-time emotion and needed to be dealt with.”
Despite trailing 4-0 in the inning of the altercation between coaches, Washington rallied to win the game, getting a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth from Stewart Ijames and scoring four times in the fifth.
“This team is incredible,” Williams said. “It is as professional a group as any I’ve met in any walk of life. … If anybody is missing this season, then they’re missing something extraordinary.”
Zeller was in his second season as Washington’s manager. The Wild Things had a 41-55 record and finished in sixth place in the East last year.
Zeller managed the Joliet Slammers for two seasons (2011-12) and led them to a league championship in 2011. He was let go by the Slammers after the 2012 season and hired as bench coach by Washington. When Chris Bando resigned citing health reasons in the offseason, Zeller was promoted to manager.
Washington will begin the season’s second half Friday night at home against the River City Rascals.

What a liar.
Clearly the pitching coach undermined the authority of the manager and Zeller would not have it.
Zeller is old school but would not throw at a kid. So you connect the dots.
This will reverberate....
This story just printed is the cock and bull story I expected.
Nice try Williams and Z.
Health problems? I truly believe that. Only, it's not Zeller's health that is bad, it's the mental health of Williams and Steve Z.
Williams and Zavacky don't know crap from shoe polish. Williams is probably going to tell Steve Z (because Steve Z is not allowed to have an independent thought even if he was capable of doing such a thing) to replace Zeller with one of the idiot coaches involved. The entire staff should be fired, including Wacky Zavacky.
Come on Jeff, defend this nutty bunch, again.
Let's finally talk about the Elephant in the Room. Has anyone noticed noted the obvious. Anyone who is worth having and caring about the WT's ends up leaving for one reason or another. Coaches, players, tickets sales people, advertising sales people, parking people and even in a rare instance, the concession people. This place is a tough place to work. They are blamed for everything from the weather to the tasteless hotdogs. All of you get out, please no one cares!!!
“It is as professional a group as any I’ve met in any walk of life. … If anybody is missing this season, then they’re missing something extraordinary.”
Is this guy delusional or what? It's the Frontier League for goodness sake. Not even the Pittsburgh media pays any attention to this team and their only about 30 miles away from here.
Went by The Crown Center today. I saw a sign saying there was a circus at the ballpark. When I got there I was informed that the circus had to send their clowns home because the WT had there own clowns. Don't know their names but their initials are SW and SZ.
Why do you suppose it is the Wild Things liars pants never catch on fire? Do Stu and Steve were fireproof underwear?
Zeller had the guts to tell them to stuff their damn ballpark where the sun doesn't shine. Good for him and woe be unto Stu and Steve's next victim, I mean manager.
"Come on Jeff, defend this nutty bunch, again."
Well, that prod has a lot to do with the topic at hand, or does it?
What I will defend is the absolute right of any business owner to make decisions on behalf of his business, regardless if I, or anybody else disagrees.
As I stated yesterday, I'm quite sorry to see Mr. Zeller leave. As to the reason(s) for his resignation, I suspect we will ever know the whole story, and perhaps, really have no reason to know if it's a personal matter.
The Wild Things will be coming out of the All Star break in first place. Let's root for the team, the 23 or so young men who work and play hard to win and provide all of us with some very entertaining nights at the ball park.
I, for one, am very excited about the possibility of seeing the TEAM in my first Frontier League playoff series.
P.S. -
My gut feeling is telling me that Anon 8:36am may have really hit the nail on the head.
How can they possibly justify keeping the pitching coach?
They can't.
Wow Jeff, you and Steve Zavacky are like peas in a pod. You deserve each other.
By the way, Williams would throw both of you to the wolves in a heartbeat if there was any benefit in it for him.
The elephant in the room analogy is good. Many fine people have left this organization and spoken bitter
words about just how unappreciative the Williams family was of their efforts, Not so much Frannie, as Stu and
his puppy dog, Steve Savacky.
This just seems to be a group that has no leadership qualities at all. No well run enterprise has the amazing employee
turnover rate that is the norm at the Wild Things. Now, that lack of leadership has spilled over into a very
ugly and very public incident in the Wild Things dugout, visible to many very shocked fans. If Steve Savacky had any integrity,
he would resign because his method of being a bully, instead of a leader, has now lead to two managers leaving in less than
one half a season. I am, of course, referring to the manager of the Rebellion earlier, and now, the Wild Things manager. The “health reasons”
malarkey is, of course, just that – BS, plain and simple.
Stu Williams should sell this team to a group that understands how to run a baseball business. Just being
wealthy does not qualify a person to be a leader. Twice this man has violated child labor laws, the last incident
costing him $40,000 in fines. Is this the Frontier League’s idea of a qualified team owner? Or, is the only prerequisite for
ownership being only that the owner be willing to spend copious amounts of money. We have been feed a steady line of promises by
this man, almost all unfulfilled, since he took over the ownership of this team. I’m thoroughly convinced that Mr. Williams
never had any intention of delivering on most of his promises In fact, I think most of it was just out and out lies! The Rebellion
being the latest example of complete failure to deliver. As far as I can see, TWIST softball is almost that good.
Is this really the kind of person that we should accept as a person to be held in high esteem within our community? I say, no.
If any of you doubt the child labor issue really happened, not once but twice, you can find it in the archives of the Post
Gazette printed in December, 2013. I don’t think the O-R reported on it but I don’t know that for sure.
THE PITCHING COACH CANT COACH HIS WAY OUT THIS.
AND ELROD MADE A MISTAKE TOO
They should call Bart back & have him lead the team that he built. The coaches left didn't do anything to build that team. Well, Boz did & that's it. The other 2 guys only care about themselves. I sit at every game and the only one that talks with the kids and fans is Bart. Nice work Stu. You couldn't have worked it out?
To Anon 4:21AM - -
What in good God's name did the WT management do to you? I'd really like to know. And now you have been including me in your attacks. I am not an employee of the Wild Things. I barely know Stu or Steve with the exception of a head nod while passing in the ballpark. I pay my money for a season ticket and go to enjoy the games and root for the team. Give it a break, will you.
Another day goes by and the pitching coach is still employed by the Mild Things.
Amazing.
I have the answer to who should be the next manager but I don't think Jeff can handle the job.
Any conjecture about who might replace Zeller? Bobby B has been with the Wild Tings for a while now even though he skipped a season a couple of years back. Maybe he would be a good choice at least to finish out this season.
I know some are hoping (me too) that Bart will return but that would be a huge piece of crow pie for him to swallow.
I can't even imagine Kevin Gryboski getting the job after what happened but,...... How can he even be allowed to remain with the team after what happened? However, I really don't know exactly what transpired, only what I read.
Anyway, does anybody have any thought about who will replace Bart?
What a hell of a thing to happen just when things seemed to be going so well.
Ima Fraid
Damn, I go to one game in 2 years and all hell breaks loose! Oh, those comical Wild Things, what will they think of next? Perhaps they'll have a game on top of the dugout before first pitch, and the winner will get to manage the team for the night. I can't wait for the full story to unfold. I was sitting on the first base side Saturday night, so I couldn't see in the dugout. And of course, there were pathetically few people in the third base side seats, less than 100, I'd say. But I do recall the home plate umpire looking into the Wild Things dugout after the inning where he issued mutual warnings was over. I too, have to seriously suspect the issue is with the ownership. I'm convinced this guy could run a Park And Ride into the ground.
Ima Fraid is absolutely looking like Nostradamus with his comments from a few years ago. Just thought I'd pass that along.
Nothing is going well. The team is playing ok but if you’ve seen the standings, all the good teams are catching up and soon will pass the WT’s. Bart leaving is just another black day in the jaded history of this once decent franchise. It’s too bad, it was good once. Anyone remember how the softball team was going to thrive under that sports genius Stu? Maybe we should ask the 20 fans that paid to get in last night or the other 30 or 40 who plan to go to the next few games. What a waste of a nice little ballpark.
After reading the story about the Rebellions today, I changed my mind about wanting to go to a game. Stu W. should definitely dump the Rebellions and the Wild Things and let someone who knows how to handle the teams do their job. The Wild Things are doing good this year but no help from Stu. How about making Bozutto the new manager - He's the most logical choice as he is familiar with them and has been with the team for a long time.
"Ima Fraid is absolutely looking like Nostradamus with his comments from a few years ago. Just thought I'd pass that along."
Thanks Swisscheda.
You don't have to be Nostradamus to figure some things out. All you need is to be observant and watch things unfold. I'm as dumb as a box of rocks and have little formal education. Now, when it comes to common sense and just plain logic, I do have an advantage over some folks in that regard.
The first mistake a lot of people make is to suck-up to people that they think are in a position to do something for them. I don't do that for one simple reason. That reason is that NO person can make me feel that I need something from them. NOBODY can make me feel inferior to them unless, I allow them to. That ain't gonna' happen!
One person in particular at CEP thought he was in a position to make me be beholding to him. I did not allow that to happen. This person thought he would able to get me not to speak my mind by using methods intimidation on me.
BIG MISTAKE!
Anyway, that's all in the past.
A lot of people on this blog put me down for my criticism of the Wild Things. Perhaps I was too harsh at times - probably was. That does not negate the fact I was right about a lot of things because much of what I thought would happen actually did.
However, all of this has diminished my interest in the Wild Things a lot. I only post rarely now, partly because of my wife's illness and mostly because I don't give a damn what happens with the Wild Things. We will continue to be season ticket holders as long as my wife wants us to. When she loses interest, we're outa' there!
I'll make no remark about Mr. Williams policies because they are of no moment to me. Season ticket holders meetings have just become as a "good old boys" club where everybody says "yes" no matter what the subject is. If somebody disagrees with something, they are promptly shouted down.
So Swiss, as far as my predictions go; The proof is in the pudding' isn't it?
Ima Fraid
Wow! Geezerville has been heard from again. Who care what you think . We all have family problems, what makes you're so special, sneaking in saltines from Wendy's! The people who work at CEP are trying hard, despite management being so clueless. The employees try hard, the players try hard, and so did Bart. Go to all the game and buy something or just go away. Really, no one cares, your comments on this blog are pointless. And toy know what, Jeff seems like a pretty smart guy.
Rowland THTG
Ima Fraid, I don't think you are that smart. It's a very basic rule of any business. If you treat the customer like crap then bad things are going to happen. Also how about having no respect for repeat customers. After a while that customer just says goodbye and your business fails. It's all very simple no predictions necessary. Steve Z has been treating customers like crap for some time and look, Falconi Feild is almost empty. speaks for itself.
" We all have family problems, what makes you're so special"
Where did I say I am so special?
You can have your opinions and I can have mine at least as long as I have your approval, is that correct?.
Saltines from Wendy's? How would you know that Adam Henry. Since it seems you feel you have a need to know, I NEVER brought ANYTHING into the park that wasn't pre-approved by the management. Not one single thing EXCEPT; the ability to think for myself without your help.
Have a nice life Adam.
It's real easy old friend...just don't go and shut up! It's so much fun to see what stupid stuff will happen nest.

All the really good comedians that are out of work and now you are trying to be one, and failing.
We geezers are really angry that you're not giving us enough of your money. We hope to have the SSI tax raised so they can take even more out of YOUR paycheck to give to us! I enjoy spending YOUR money.
I really think you need some good quality psychotherapy before your head explodes.
See you at the game. You know where we sit. Stop by and say "hello". Bet you don't have the manhood to do it...
BYW: I going both blind and deaf so I will not be able to hear you or read your post any longer. What a shame......for you!
Gee, what would I do in a days time if I didn't have the blogs to read. You are all so petty and childish that it sounds like kindergarten class all over again. Everyone has the right to their opinion whether you agree or not. I do enjoy reading the blogs but can't say I agree with many. If you don't like the comments that are being written why bother to keep coming back, reading, and making more stupid comments. Some of them have such hatred and arrogance in them. Don't any of you have jobs or hobbies that can take up your time? I like the computer but only read the blogs about once a week. I just had to respond after reading the last few.
So the pitching coach with the bad temper is still here???
The WT's front office and owners in NO WAY did their homework when hiring this pitching coach.
He has a horrible track record.
He has been excommunicated by every organization that he has been associated with.
Major league, High School, Rec baseball organizations and everything in between.
He does not get along with players, coaches, umpires, organizers or anyone. He knows more than anyone about baseball. Just ask him...
Nope, this guy is ticking away. Each time he blows a gasket the effect is magnified.
No way did WT's back-check this guy...
