Two games played, one record tied

The Wild Things will take an 0-2 record into the series finale this evening at Florence. While two games is far too little of a sample size to draw any conclusions about this year's team -- remember, the 2002 Washington team that went 56-28 started the season 1-5 -- one record was tied with a 6-2 loss Friday night to the Freedom.

Dating back to last season, Washington has lost nine games in a row, which matches the franchise record for most consecutive losses. The Wild Things closed last season with seven straight defeats, losing one game at Traverse City, then six consecutive home games, including a three-game series to the Frontier League Greys.

The other nine-game losing streak in franchise history also crossed two seasons. The Wild Things lost the final eight games of the 2010 season (two at Windy City, three at Lake Erie and three at Traverse City to close the 2010 season, then the 2011 opener at Joliet).

One other note heading into tonight's series finale: Washington has lost 9 of its last 11 at Florence, and 17 of its last 21 overall against the Freedom.

If Ray Shero gets fired for eight straight postseason appearances, how does Steve Z still have a job?

No seriously. That is a real question.

Hopefully the stench of the Bando Bunch is finally gone, and the Wild Things will be worth going to see this year. I actually plan on checking them out again this season after not attending a single game last season. 3 losses to start the season isn't good, though. 7 walks in Saturday's game, ouch! Maybe this Dunn kid could be their best ace since Aaron Ledbetter, let's hope so.

I heard a rumor that parking was going to be reduced this season, but not from a good source. Anybody know? I'd be surprised if it's true. After all, the team did have to shell out $40,000 in fines for violation of child labor laws from what I read over the winter.

I'm guessing girls softball will average more ticket sales than the Wild Things. I just see no real effort in advertising the team, like they used to do on Pirates' telecasts.

Hello,

I will be offering my baseball wisdom from time to time.
The pitching staff will determine the success of this club. The appraisal of talent and who can succeed in this league in the eyes of the management will be tested. Mistakes have been made already.

If the baseball team stinks why would you want to fire the food and beverage manager? Well I guess that is a theory the Penguins would take. Then they would let the next food and bev manager decide the fate of the coaches.

Anon 9:46 comes off sounding like a former player who was cut. If mistakes were made already then share with us which ones. If you're sure then I assume you were at all the practices and spring games to properly evaluate which guys should of made the team and which should have been sent packing.

Good news for all of you. I plan to do little, or no posting this year. LOL!
My wife is too ill for me to have much time for the Wild Things.
I'm glad to see Swisscheda back here posting again.
I've sort of wondered about all the very young people working at CEP - they seem too young to be working there. So, exactly what happened to get the Wild Things fined? I thought Stu was too smart for something like that to happen. If it is a fact, how has it managed to escape being a story in the O-R? Perhaps it's just a rumor, probably is.

The WT food and beverage manager of a few years back reached his level of not being able to handle the job. But, he was a very good at smiling at Stu Williams so....., Stu gave him the title of Asst. General Manager. The rest is sad history

Not to be argumentative but, the more I think about it the more I really have my doubts about this statement. Just where did you read this? If you want to have any credibility you must post your sources.

Chris, is there any place I can find this story? Was it reported in the O-R? Did you ever mention on this blog?
Heavens to Betsy, Stu must have more money than anything else.

I found the story in the P G

http://www.post-gazette.com/business/2013/12/21/Wild-Things-baseball-team-fined-for-violating-child-labor-laws/stories/201312210046

How unwise can these people be? They didn't do it once, they did it twice for God's sake. So much for their public image. Lokks like nobody's head rolled either.

First of all I am not a player who got cut and I am not a scout either. The Wild Things brought way too many pitchers into camp and they cut at least one quality pitcher who throws harder and has more abilty than many in this league. While the current pitching staff appears to be improved on paper with trades for 3 "established" starters based on the previous year's performances, we still need more games to serve as data points. Talent does not always match up with results over a short sample of games. The pressure is there to win and that is what will be this team's downfall again this season. They kept players that should have been released and they let players go that deserved to stay.

To Anon 7:56 .... If you're not a player who was cut or a player on the team .... how do know they "cut at least one quality pitcher who throws harder" Where did u get that information? Did you sit at practice with a radar gun? ..... 'The pressure is there to win and that is what will be this team's downfall again this season." Isn't there pressure to win every year. I've never heard of a team in any professional sport that had no pressuure to win or do well. ..... "They kept players that should have been released and they let players go that deserved to stay." How about sharing with us who should have been kept and who should have been cut. Anyone can say that. How about showing you know something and provide some names.

Surely you are aware that every player's release (and signing) is posted on the website of the league and the team. Further you can do ample research on any player in the Frontier League and find out what they did prior to coming to the Wild Things, what they did in college if they played college ball and what they accomplished in any previous pro experience.

Not one but TWO child labor law violations? Why was not a big story in the O-R? It clearly shows the moral compass of both the Wild Things and the O-R.
Covering up cat poop doesn't make the stink go away.
Hard to overlook the fact that Steve Z was in charge of the concession stands during the time period of the first violations. Also, ever tougher to overlook the fact this same person was in charge as Asst. General Manager when the second violation was committed. Stu, you really know how to pick the people that work for you. Obviously the first requirement is that they kiss the ground you walk on. That being the case it is very easy to see just how Steve Z. not only got the promotion but also how he keeps it.

I hardly think that a baseball team employing a 12-year bat boy qualifies as a "big story."

Actually it comes up during the night, creating the morning.

Then, it sets during the day, creating night.

Sure looks like this year's travel team might be the worst the FL has ever fielded, which has to be a concern for the league office. I thought last year's Greys were very competitive but this year's edition seems to be lacking in pitching, even with one guy having 8 years of pro experience and another with a 12-3 record in affiliated ball. We should have a better feel for the Greys after tonight because Justin Jackson, the guy with the 12 affiliated wins, is listed as the probable starter.

Take it easy on Assistant GM, he's not a butt kisser however, he is a Yes Man. The problem is when the owner wants your opinion, he give it to you. That's why so many stupid, stupid mistakes have been made in the operation of the WT's.
