They can still trade in the Frontier League
Though the nonwaiver trade deadline in Major League Baseball passed yesterday, the transaction deadline has not been reached in the Frontier League. The Wild Things made another trade Wednesday, sending relief pitchers Steve Grife and Nick Cicio to Southern Illinois in exchange for center fielder Darian Sandford (pictured) and lefty reliever Anthony Collazo.
The hard-throwing Grife (0-2, 6 saves, 4.79) and soft-tossing Cicio (0-4, 1 save, 4.25) each have been erratic this season. Though I like Grife as a power arm in a save situation, it seemed as if Grife was never a favorite of this year's Wild Things' coaching staff and his role has diminished in recent weeks.
Sandford, who leads the Frontier League in stolen bases, spent two years in the Kansas City Royals system before signing with Southern Illinois this season. He's a speedy switch-hitter who made the Frontier League All-Star game and is batting .256 with 45 stolen bases.
It seems that pitchers might have figured out Sandford as he ended his run with Southern Illinois on a 6-for-41 slide.
Collazo (3-0. 1 save, 2.28) has been a setup guy for the Miners. This is his first year of pro baseball. Collazo played at Howard Junior College and the University of Oklahoma.
By my count, with the addition of Sandford and Collazo, the Wild Things have had 55 players on the roster during the regular season. Yes, that's a team record. The previous record for most players used was 46, set in 2009, when Mark Mason was the manager.
The trading of Cicio meands that only seven of the 24 players who were with Washington on opening day in Evansville are still on the roster. The seven include five pitchers (Casey Barnes, Justin Hall, Jhonny Montoya, Chris Smith and Shawn Smith) and two position players (Michael Bando and Shain Stoner).

It's good that they're getting a guy with some speed that gets on base a good amount of the time. This way Bando has more guys to leave on base. How can Papa Bando keep his job after this year?
Ho Humm. What’s new?. The Wild Cubs make another trade and keep Buttons Bando on the roster.
Different day, same old crap. There seems to be a sharply declining interest in anything Wild Cubs.
Can’t really blame anyone at this point in another ruined season. This season was slightly more disappointing than the previous few seasons because of the stealth manager. BTW, has anybody actually
seen Chris Bando? Perhaps he is just phoning it in to the dugout.
I suggest that next year we have NO Bando’s at all! Ban the Bandos!!!
Understand the Wild Things having been giving away tickets by the fistful recently. Two days in a row at Wal-Mart last week and at a youth baseball tournament at Washington Park to name a few. No reason to buy tickets anymore. Employees are giving them away and begging you to attend a game. Seems like they're papering the house.
Great game last night - 16 hits, including a few key timely ones - we sure could use more of that kind of baseball -
“Understand the Wild Things having been giving away tickets by the fistful recently.”
Anybody know if this is true? These ‘freebies’ will probably come into CEP and sit in an expensive seat totally unchallenged, as usual. The fearkin’ towel waver sure isn’t going to do anything.
How nice it must be to be a season ticket holder that pre-paid for their tickets see the Wild Cubs now giving seats away. What a way to treat long time customers. How about a rebate for these long suffering loyal fans? Pretty sure that ain’t gonna happen!
This organization is heading for the Waste Management dumpster – fast!
Come on Jeff, the season is lost. the team is just a bunch of no-names and "Who's that guy" What a damn debacle...
"Ban the Bando's" sounds like a great fan slogan for next year.
Or, who about, "Bring Back Jelks"?
No matter how you felt about Jelks at least you knew he was at the ballpark.
Ima Fraid
Where can I get some Ban the Bando's bumper stickers? They should be shown the door and kicked in the butt, and put on an airplane to San Diego NEVER, EVER to return.
Ban the Bando's slogan is the best idea on this blog all this season.
Pay them off and be rid of them.
Papering the house may be in response to unhappy corporate partners seeing that the number of eyeballs they were promised has not materialized.
Season Ticket Holder? Meh. More important not to look like a schmuck to the rich folk that spend their company's money instead of the people that spend their own money.
If anyboby decides to make some Ban the Bando's T-shirts I'll be sure to buy at least two.
These guys need to go.
Anonymous who posted at 5:28 wrote one of the best posts of the year. Nepotism in baseball is all fine and dandy if your last name is Ripken, but the Bando Bunch...wow. They should have axed this guy the minute he signed his kid. .184 average and 11 RBI all season long, what a waste of a roster spot. Aren't bench players supposed to have versatility? Where is his?
The best case scenario is for poppa Bando to accept a job closer to home during the offseason, and opt out of the remaining 4 years of his contract. Frontier League managers surely can't make much money, right? But honestly, even if you brought in the ghost of Connie Mack to manage this cast, the results would be the same.
Stu, if you truly love us, do the right thing. Step down and sell the team.
Last-place team .... Free tickets being given away ..... Looks like the Wild Things' ST holders are getting what they deserve this year. The only things that would make this year worse for them would be for Matlock reruns to be taken off TV and the price of Geritol to go up.
Swisscheda I've got a question or two for you. Do you think anybody would buy the team? And who would the Asst. General Manager have to suck up to then?
Ban the Bando's
