Sidick's sizzling start

While the Wild Things' bats cooled off during the first half of June, one player who bucked the trend is outfielder Chris Sidick. Now in his sixth season in the Frontier League, Sidick has the reputation of being a player who starts slowly and heats up sometime around the all-star break.

This year, Sidick has been the Wild Things' most consistent hitter. Entering Sunday's game against Traverse City, Sidick is tied for sixth in the league with a .343 batting average and is fourth in on-base percentage at .451. It's the best start of his career.

"He's the guy who gets our offense going," said designated hitter Jacob Dempsey. "And when he gets on base, he disrupts the other team so much because they're afraid he's going to steal. He helps the guys hitting behind him get better pitches to hit."

Sidick opened the season with a nine-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in all but three of the Wild Things' 27 games. He has 10 multiple-hit games. He had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two in the Wild Things' 8-run sixth inning Saturday night against Kalamazoo.

So what has been the key to Sidick's hot start? Perhaps a different batting stance? Maybe more batting practice in the offseason? What about working deeper into the count?

Nope. None of the above.

"I just think it's better luck," Sidick said. "I don't think I'm hitting the ball any different than last year. My strikeout rate is about the same as last year. The difference is I'm getting more hits to fall. Last year, I hit a lot of balls right at people. This year, those balls are falling in."

Chris:
Several days ago, the O-R had a question about getting free tickets for the Pirates. I think it would be interesting if you had the same question and options and just substitited Wild Things for Pirates. (poll question)

I wonder what the break-even attendence is for the Wild Things?
Also with the high attendence for the game that started at noon, I wonder how many of the kids tickets were free and what would the attendence have been if only paid attendence were counted?
I'll bet the WT's made more money overall counting concessions and the amount the kids spent than what they would have made on a published attendence of 1500 for a night game.

I don't know this for sure but, I have heard that many of the people that attend the regular evening games are "freebies". The point being that the real money is made at the concession stands.

Also, I like the new policy of no tip jars allowed at the concession stands.

Since there is little being posted can we all assume nobody cares about the Wild Things?
Do most of us only want to support the team when they win and ignore then when they are not playing so well?
I am amazed how most of the fans refer to the team as "we" when they are winning. However, when the team is having a difficult time on the field these same fans refer to the team as "they"!
"Fair Weather" fans are not really fans at all, they just want something to complain about.

So when are these guys Marlin and Everson going to be held accountable for putting together this pitful team. It wasn't to long ago that Vecchio, Mason and Jelks were being called everything in the book and being run out of town for putting much better teams on the field than this lousy one.
