Thoughts through 3 games
Some notes, observations and thoughts after the Wild Things' season-opening homestand:
* There were plenty of lasting images from the season's first three games and not many were positive for the Wild Things: Washington's baserunning blunders in the opener, the muddy and water-logged outfield, the empty seats ...
* On the positive side, you have to be impressed with the hitting of Adam Amar and Mark McGonigle. They could be two impact hitters. Chris Sidick is off to a better start than last year, which is a good sign. Michael Parker, who had a 24-game hitting streak last season, seems to be hitting the ball as well, if not better, so far this season.
* The Wild Things have to be concerned about attendance, or the lack of it. The 1,624 on hand for Sunday's game was the second-smallest crowd in franchise history. The 6,311 for the series was the second-smallest attendance for a three-game series. The opener didn't sell out -- for the first time. During the first inning of the opener, there was one section of seating along the third-base line that had four empty rows at the top. The same section had one person seated in the front row. The next section down the line also had one person seated in the front row.
There did, however, seem to be more people in the box seats for the opener than last year.
* The pace/length of games have gotten ridiculously long. And don't blame it on the between-innings promotions. Blame it on the "Moneyball" era and umpires.
Hitters today are taught to work the count like never before, and the umpires help them by refusing to call a strike a strike. The rulebook says the upper end of the strike zone is the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, and the lower level is the hollow beneath the knee. The strike zone, however, has become the bottom of the belt to the top of the kneecap.
I have some video/DVD copies of baseball games played in the 1960s and 1970s. The thing that jumps out to me when watching them is the strike zone. The zone was actually called correctly back then, players had to swing and the game moved at a quicker, more fan-friendly pace.
* Have you ever seen an outfield that was only partially mowed on opening day? I hadn't until Friday.
* This is the best Oakland County/Midwest team. The Cruisers/Sliders have more speed than ever before, Zach Pace is always on base, Joash Brodin and Jimmy Baker can hit, Luis Fernandez looks like a good defensive shortstop and pitchers James Albury and Kevin Asselin have track records of success. Too bad the Cruisers/Sliders are playing 51 of their first 57 games on the road. It's hard to stay in a playoff race with that kind of disadvantage.
* Washington catcher Billy O'Conner probably earned a few more starts by going 4-for-5 Sunday.
* Best line of the weekend came after Sunday's game, when someone brought a plate of alligator from the exotic foods stand into the Wild Things' clubhouse for the players and coaches to try. "We got the alligator from left centerfield," the person said. That might be where they'll find next weekend's entree: shark.
* There was no reason to play the Saturday night game. It should have been postponed. The outfield was a swamp Friday, and all the rain early Saturday made it worse.
* According to the Frontier League website, the Wild Things' July 31 game at Oakland County has been postponed and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader Aug. 1.

I would have to say that mr. Dugan pretty much hit the nail on the head. I along with my wife attended the opener and Sunday's games, and during the ride home, we both agreed that there is something missing, and it seems to be organization. Just not the same as the past years. Hopefully, with the new leadership and staff, the problems will be corrected and we will once again have a first class baseball team. And yes, I am not happy with the food price increase. During these rough economic times, it would make sense to try and maintain the prices, not raise them.
The new leadership is arrogant. Frannie is still part of the ownership isn't she? The novelty has wore off. Most everyone I talk to droped their season tickets and don't even want game tickets even if their free! Just saying !
Just some random observations....
The team's weak point thus far is the left side of the infield. Both Denny Duron and Chris Raniere have struggled both in the field and at the plate. They have 4 errors between them already, and Duron has had mental lapses where he failed to cover third base. However, it is so early in the season, and Duron was the defensive player of the year in his college conference last year. Surely he's going to turn it around. I did see him make a great play last night.
It's great to see Chris Sidick get off to a good start after he struggled in the early season last year. He is still my favorite player to watch. Congrats to Chris on breaking the league's career record for runs scored last night! I wonder if he will entertain thoughts of returning next season as a "super vet"?
Great job by Steve MacFarland last night in getting out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the first inning last night, which began with him fanning Cruisers' cleanup man Jimmy Baker.
I'd take Cruisers 3B Martin Parra on the Wild Things roster anytime. Everytime I turn around, he's on base. 10 times, by my count, in the opening series. He's quickly becoming another Zach Pace.
The Wild Things beat themselves in the first 2 games. Free passes, bad defense, and baserunning blunders will always be a killer. The pitching staff gave up 20 walks/hit batsmen in the series, with 11 of those runners eventually scoring. Nothing more maddening than a lead-off walk! Several of the new pitchers had very impressive strikeouts/walks ratios in college....what happened?
The attendance was alarming. I went to 2 of the games. Weather surely was a factor for the first 2 games, but Sunday was a beautiful evening, and there couldn't have been even 1000 actual rear ends in the seats. No atmosphere, either! But as for myself, I still find the Wild Things FAR more fun than following the Pirates annual freakshow.
The new on-field emcee is doing a fine job. But I still think letting Greg Thompson go wasn't a good idea. A good, classy, local guy!
Cheers!

thanks Dutch, I mean SwissCheda
Why don't The Wildthings post the box score along with the attendence on the web site anymore ?
Might have something to do with Howe Sports Data no longer keeping baseball statistics. I'm not sure what stats service affiliated leagues now use, but all indy leagues are using Pointstreak for the first time this year. I know there were some problems during the homestand (players not being in the database or having the wrong uniform number; the program having only enough slots for four pitchers per team in a game). They had to work out the bugs. One good thing about Pointstreak is it provides live scoring.
To get live scoring, copy this link into your browser and click on the game:

I went to the Saturday and Sunday games. The attendence was shocking.
My thoughts are: i noticed they had different PA announcers on both games. I enjoyed Saturday's announcer but also must say that bill did a good job on Sunday
I met Todd at milk and cookies and he seems like a douchebag. The emcee wasn't bad. He's not Dutch, but wasn't bad.
What in the world was he doing Sunday while the pitcher was warming up, during a pitching change. Seemed stupid. Is this what we are paying for now?
The on field stuff takes way too long as well. It delayed the game. I know the people are new, but atleast it was entertaining before. They did a good job. now it was boring.
A few “observations” on some of the observations.
To the man and woman that agreed that something is missing and hope we will again have a first class team
here…………….. You never HAVE had a first class team here, just a lot of hype.
The person that said “The novelty has wore off”----Exactly!!! The time for the team to move on is rapidly approaching.
How about this statement..” I still find the Wild Things FAR more fun than following the Pirates annual freakshow” Do you think the whole Frontier League isn’t a freak show?. What kind of organized league would schedule home games for a team without having financing secured for the park to be built? Why not just stay home and watch MLB on TV or computer. That’s what I do, but that’s just me.
“The new management is arrogant” How can you say that when the season just started?
The remark about Todd Marlin is just plain crass and stupid.
talk to some sponsors that Marlin has met with, he is very arrogant and comes off as a real D-bag! He's turning people sour about the WWT by the way he's talking about their past relationships.
Milk and cookies, way to be original
Wild Things win third game in-a-row by beating Kalamazoo 9-1. Check out the recap...

"The time for the team to move on is rapidly approaching."
Yep, the sooner that troublesome baseball team gets out of town the sooner the people in Washington can get back to focusing on what they're good at like selling drugs and hookers on Highland Ave., shopping at the Washington Mall, barhopping downtown, snow removal, corrupting Washington County politics, collecting unemployment, shopping at The Foundry, fighting over casino profits, raising parking meter rates ...

Good to see Ross is reading the blog.
Some of you people wouldn't have anything good say about the WILD THINGS if GOD himself was running the team.
I forgot to add LET'S GO WILD THINGS

Sounds like a disgruntled employee to me. The next thing somebody will say is that Ross wasn’t a D-bag!!
Nuts! Ross was, and still is, the KING OF ALL D-BAGS!!!!!!! Todd has a tough job to do getting things turned around here. I wish him only the best. Now, go get a REAL job!
If Todd is so great then why did he make a backwards career move to come to Washington ? The ride is about to come to an end. Same crummy team , Same crummy front office attitude, Higher priced concession food. I could care less if I ever see another game......Well maybe I'll go for some ALLIGATOR.....BAHAHAHA !
"Ross was, and still is, the KING OF ALL D-BAGS!!!!!!!"
Sounds like a disgruntled ex-employee or ex-player to me.
You really hit the nail on the head, Chris, with the comment about the strike zone. The problem exists at all levels of baseball (although if you want to see some really bizarre stike zones, watch women's college softball sometime). Not that anyone seems to be accountable, but the quality of umpiring in the major leagues is monumentally worse than when I started watching baseball in the '60s. Every umpire seems to have - and to be ALLOWED to have - his own personal version of a strike zone, and it's NEVER the actual strike zone called for in the rulebook. Also a joke are the "neighborhood" plays at second base on double plays. Second basemen and shortstops now pretty much only have to glance at second base in order to be credited with touching the bag.
Brant, did you ever think that a lot of that has to do with new technology that allows you to see different, better, and clearer angles -- as well as multiple replays after the fact?
I was called twice to renew my season tickets from what i'm hearing about the new regime i'm glad I didn't.I agree it's time for the Wildings to go.What happened to John S? Don't believe what you have read.
I agree its time for the wild things to go. my taxes have gone up, my property value has gone down, unemployment has gone up in the area since they came to town. we need to turn it around in western pa. and it starts with getting rid of the wildthings and there family entertainment.
But where are we going to get Alligator to eat at
