And the winner is...

The winner of the name-the-team contest for the new franchise in Avon, Ohio is ...

OK, there's no drama here. You probably looked at the logo above and know the team will be called the Lake Erie Crushers.

News of the name was leaked last week but it became official today during a media event at Avon City Hall. According to the team's press release, there were more than 800 name-the-team entries. Approximately 1,500 people voted after the final list of seven names were revealed.

"Our goal was to select a name the team and the communities in our region could be proud of, a name that resonates with fans and reflects the best characteristics of our area," said team owner Steven Edelson, "The new ballpark will draw fans from Lakewood, Rocky River, all of Western Cuyahoga County, as far west as Sandusky, Lorain County and all the cities in between. It was vitally important to us that each of these areas play an active role in the process."

The winner of the name-the-team contest receives a 12-game mini-season-ticket plan. No word on if parking fees are included.

"To us Crushers demonstrates toughness, hard work and resilience. This is an apt description of the character of our region," said Edelson, "Our goal will be to live up to this description both on and off the field."

The Crushers' team colors appear to be red, black and white with a bit of brozne or gold (based on the logo). You have to wonder about that decision. The Crushers are the fourth team - Washington, Florence and Kalamazoo are the others - with red and black as their dominant colors.

How many players on the 2008 Wild Things roster who are age eligible in 2009 played for Maz?
Rivera, Sidick, Hollenbeck, Messner, and Grandstrand.
With Grandstrand's connection to the Ringhold coaching and Sikick's base school locally, that would only leave 3 players that played for Maz. So I would say 3 at the most. Greg Jelks and Ross really cleaned up the roster going into 2008 with the worst results in franchise history.

It would be great to see Messner go someplace, ANYWHERE! I've grown tired of his act.

Your ahead of the boat with the Mason prediction. Should be interesting. I know he didnt have too much success in Chillicothe but I think hes a good fit with WT.

Wow,
Mark Marson was named the new manager.
Someone really has the inside scoup.
I was really off track.
I think it will be good for the team and I would hope to see some new player signings soon.

Ross makes all the player decisions and acquisitions anyway. Doesnt some of the losing season fall onto him? I know its easy to blame the manager.

What happened to Greg Jelks?

Was he fired? Did he resign?

I've been out of the area for a while, and came back today to see Mason was hired without hearing anything about Jelks leaving.

Isn't it interesting that nothing in the entire press release mentions the departure of Jelk? Was there something published previously?

And don't be surprised if an announcement is made soon that Wayne Krenchecki is the new manager of Evansville. New managers all over the Frontier League.

Since when did Jelks ever play???? He isn't entirely to blame the players seem to play without caring anyway a clean out of some players who take for granted the game of baseball need to go... Messner can lead the pack!!! From what I hear there are a select few concentrating on chasing tail and boozing rather than making their game on the field better... so lay off Jelks he can only do so much with so little.

If Wayne Krenchicki becomes Evansville's manager it will make for an interesting relationship with the Wild Things. Krenchicki and Ross Vecchio are long-time friends, as close as brothers. I believe all of the Wild Things' moves with the Atlantic League were made with teams Krenchicki managed.

Hey Dugan, at least they won't be able to make those moves this season because they will be competing against each other. Look for the announcement this afternoon...I don't think anyone was getting on Jelks, I think he was amazed that there was nothing in the papers, on the Frontier website about Jelks being fired or his resigning. Afterall, he did win the championship with Evansville.
